This rake should come with a set of instructions. The rake has two rows of teeth. One side has teeth with angled edges to prevent the teeth from digging in as it is designed to lightly pull across the surface to rake loose thatch up. The other side is designed to dig deeper into the soil for older accumulations of thatch. There is an adjustment screw to angle the teeth as you like. Neither set of teeth is intended to rip live grass from the soil.
If you are buying a thatch rake I assume you know why grass needs to be thatched. If not then Google it.
I have only used this rake on St. Augustine grass. St. Augustine grass is problematic to de-thatch because it naturally has runner roots that are alive and and dead that gets in the way of de-thatching. You may actually need to do some "vertical thatching" (Google it) to cut the runners before de-thatching.
St. Augustine grass is suicidal grass. It will kill itself unless you intervene by periodically de-thatching it and adding a layer of top soil on the roots.
I am giving only four stars because the teeth are a very thin light metal and should be just a little thicker. Still there are not many other options for a manual thatching rake. This rake is intended for only small areas. If you have a big yard with a lot of grass, especially St. Augustine grass, then bite the bullet and buy a gas powered thatcher which should also do vertical thatching.
