About the Author

Born in Indiana in 1982, Pete Buttigieg is the US secretary of transportation and former mayor of South Bend, Indiana. A Rhodes Scholar and Navy veteran, Buttigieg was educated at Harvard University and the University of Oxford. He and his husband live in South Bend. --This text refers to the hardcover edition.

Review

"The book offers further proof, were it needed, that the former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, also a former presidential candidate, has the most interesting political mind since Barack Obama."
Charles Kaiser, The Guardian

"Shedding some personal light, Buttigieg recounts a few memorable lessons he has learned during both his military and political career. For example, he shows how establishing trust was imperative to the success of his life-threatening duties as a military driver in Afghanistan. The author also gives plenty of attention to the gross injustices that have occurred under the Trump administration, many of which serve as cases in point for why our trust in government has eroded so much.... An eloquent call to action for socially conscious citizens to get involved in restoring essential networks of trust."
Kirkus Reviews, starred review --This text refers to the hardcover edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars We need this book now.
By Jim Ward on October 6, 2020
Talk about a timely subject! My former Mayor Pete Buttigigeg examines "trust," the erosion of which is so costly that progress is diminished.

If you've read Pete's first book, "Shortest Way Home," you know that his writing style is immediately ingratiating; larger themes are served by personal stories that build his argument. And for me, who volunteered for his campaign and spent wonderful days in Iowa and South Bend, hearing his take on what was an unprecedented campaign is a thrill.

But, regardless of your politics, Pete Buttigieg is here making an argument for a best path forward out of the divisions and paralysis we find ourselves in now.

My favorite passage is this: "The vote, after all, is the ultimate expression of trust in the judgment of the people. If the Constitution places trust in the people in theory, the election is how this happens in practice. [snip] The legitimacy of our entire system depends on the trustworthiness of the process."

Like I said, timely!
