Truth in the Unseen travels deeper into the character of Brandon Chase, showing the ups and downs of his life as he tries to be successful at his music career. Right from the start, we are taken down an emotional road, as Janie, Brandon’s girlfriend breaks up with him, leaving him sad and disconcerted. He calls on his friend Carlos, who meets with him and talks him through it. I like the way the author showed Brandon maturing right before our eyes. The story pulled on every emotion I had, sadness, happiness, anger and laughter. It was enjoyable to read, all the characters so true to life, I felt like I was sitting right next to them as I read the book.
Being book two of the series, it seems appropriate to catch the reader of this novel up to date with highlights of the first books: From Book 1 WHAT CASTS A SHADOW – ‘ Brandon Chane is an artistic visionary, a profoundly gifted young musician and poet. He is also deeply troubled, and seemingly at the mercy of dark forces that threaten to tear his life apart. He has risked all of his fragile hopes upon the fate of his band, Edge of the Known, and the dream of following his Muse. Here he narrates the incredible journey that begins when he meets Saul Mason, an enigmatic soul-guide who insists that Brandon’s life and destiny are of his own making. Saul’s wisdom and guidance sets Brandon upon a path of spiritual awakening; and this inner transformation reverberates not only within his own life but also within the lives of all the hungry, searching souls who are touched by his music.’
And now in Book 2 – TRUST IN THE UNSEEN - ‘Following the rigors of their self-made tour of the West, the members of the groundbreaking and volatile band Edge of the Known - "hands down, craziest band on Earth" - have an unprecedented chance to finally expose their music to the world. Unfortunately, singer/guitarist Brandon Chane, founder member and erratic genius of the group, is weathering a spiraling trip through an abyss of heartbreak and despair. His personal pain threatens to derail his band's progress even as it fuels some of its most incendiary songs. To further complicate matters, his mentor, Saul Mason, is weathering his own personal crisis and no longer appears as the all-knowing spiritual savant that Brandon first perceived him to be. The road ahead looks bleak; and once more, Brandon turns to the one thing that has sustained him throughout the course of his wounded, conflicted and inspired life: His Muse. "We'd all thrown our fates to the wind, trusting in the unknown - in the Unseen, as our EP so proudly proclaimed - and that leap had thus far landed us in a place where we couldn't even grope our way forward in the dark anymore." Discovering his voice was only the first step of the journey. Now he must somehow learn to trust the depths from which it comes, and the unknown horizons that it may sweep him away to, even as every part of his personal world seems to be falling apart.’
In an immensely accessible manner Seth introduces his own philosophy and places it well in the characters of Brandon and Saul – and by osmosis, in us. Very touching and significant thinking is shared throughout this readable novel. Grady Harp, January 17
Brandon Chane is the front man and guitarist for the grunge band “Edge of the Known”. He is a deeply souled and tormented man trying to put his past behind him. His mother died when he was young, leaving him and his little sister Rachel with an abusive father. Their aunt and uncle stepped in, taking Rachel to raise leaving Brandon to fend for himself where he escapes into a life of poets lost in torment. His anchor and girlfriend, Janie out of fear of what Brandon is capable of doing leaves him as he balances on the edge. His friend and therapist, Saul is caught up in his own crisis, leaving Brandon with only his bandmates and his poetic music as he faces the demons within that torment his troubled soul. Can he hold it together for the band to make it big or will he be lost in an abyss of his own making…
What a sensational read! Mullins writing style is beyond captivating as he exposes the very soul of the tormented Brandon. Readers will be torn with wanting to save the young man to relating to his troubled mind. I found Brandon to share similarities with another tormented soul, Jim Morrison of the Doors, who was also a poetic genius. Very deep, psychological novel that must be read, beginning with book one to capture the very essence of Mullins depth of the character of Brandon Chane. Become lost in one man’s mind riding on the waves of torment and poetic music. Outstanding novel and series.
