Two broken souls merged together through deceit and betrayal.
The story is surrounded by mechanics, a garage style, forbidden love. At first glance, I thought J was going to be one of those. You know, brass balls... Conceited. Not that I don't like a strong female, but there's an invisible line, one where the female is not relatable. As the story continued, though. Her character evolved into a broken woman. Walls were built to keep her appearing strong on the outside. Cole wielding the hammer. Yet holding his firmly in place.
I think this is categorized as Romantic Suspense, some scenes could cause triggers. The abuse sustained is the backdrop and not vividly approached. The scars ever present. There's a mix of everyday life and crime families. A realistic vibe from the first page. The way the 'garage' was weaved in, reminded me of bikers, not sure why. Maybe because of the tough exterior of each character. Rough around the edges vibe. I love a suspenseful mystery and this one had all the signs of betrayal, the who done it feel.
Now the romantic part was off kilter for me. I'm not going to say insta-love, but it was too fast for my liking. Not the bonding... I can't find the right worlds without giving spoilers. Wishy washy. I love banter and the pull within the two main characters, but at times it came off as hurtful, not playful, like I expected. I loved Cole as the hero, a ex-con with a heart of gold. J, well, she wasn't on my favorites list for a while.
3.5 Stars for a realistic vibe in the suspense category. And by the end I wanted a story for the side characters, they were nicely incorporated with enough intrigue to engage me.
Jocelyn Jane Zona or J as she is known by family and friends, is the female version of her father. Being raised by her Dad since her Mom died, J knows all there is about working on cars and is proud to be a mechanic in her Dad's shop. After her last disastrous relationship she swears off men but it's hard when she works around a shop full of them. But at least those she works with is more like family, until the day Cole Masters is leaning on her toolbox.
Cole Masters is at Z's Service for a job and he feels like he might be at a place where he fits in. After his past, a fresh start is what he needs. When he meets J, he is drawn to her tough attitude, strong will and her I can do it myself mentality. When Cole and J are thrown together on a trip, they can't deny the attraction but stop after one kiss because they both know that one night will never be enough.
When trouble comes calling at Z's and J gets hurt, it is Cole that wants to protect her. But J doesn't want to tell her Dad because she thinks that she is protecting him and the shop. Can Cole trust J with his past and can J tell him about her past? Will J realize that she is not protecting anyone by not telling her Dad? Can they protect the shop and save J in the end?
Even though it started out a little slow to me, it picks up and turns out to be a good story. I can't wait for the next book which is going to be about Asher and Jules, which are Cole and J's best friends. This is a first for me from this author and I can't wait to read more from her.
**Wicked Reads Review Team**
Everyone has secrets, either to protect themselves or their families. Oftentimes the secrets arise due to person being betrayed in some form. The person who keeps the secret does so to prevent others from looking at them with pity, sorrow, disgust or a combination of emotions. The person is embarrassed by what has happened to them, as if they could have prevented the actions of others. The victim often blames themselves for the what was done to them, as the abuser reinforces the physical abuse with mental abuse. This is the basis of J's and Cole's story.
Both J and Cole are keeping secrets. Things they don't want anyone else to know. Cole is keeping his secret because he doesn't want people to know the why of his prison stay. J is keeping hers because of her foolishness of falling for the wrong man.
The attraction between J and Cole is a tangible thing, but with their trust issues, its going to be hard to find a common ground. As things heat up at the garage, J begins to rely on Cole but his unwillingness to tell her about his past is something she can't overcome. Cole does his best to be a good friend to J but he's tired of being kept at arms length.
A very good book and I hope that we get the second book in the story soon.

Triggers: Assault, Criminal activity
I was given this book for an honest review by Wicked Reads.
J is a great mechanic. She loves her job, but hates the politics that come along with 1. being the only woman in the shop and 2. working for her dad. She finds herself in the cross hairs of a battle that isn't really hers to fight.
Cole is an ex-con who is just trying to get on with his life. When he meets J, there is an instant attraction, but he wants to try and keep his nose clean and not rock the boat. However, when J is put in jeopardy, he can't help but involve himself.
J and Cole have a good connection and they each try to protect each other. This is a fast paced story with a lot going on. The romance was a good story, but not the whole story and I think that made it much more enjoyable. I liked that there were so many moving parts.
I really want to see what happens next and I hope we get to see more of J and Cole.
