I picked up this little book because my family and I and some friends are going through some rough times right now and I thought perhaps I could learn something about coping with my hard times. I liked that the author didn't treat Elijah like this super hero who always got everything correct. He stumbled just as I do but God never deserted Elijah. The main idea of the book is that Elijah was a man just like us WHO PRAYED. Elijah had a strong prayer life and that was what helped him get through his hard times.
The chapters are short and go through steps of Elijah's life. The emphasis is not on the tough times but on the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob whom Elijah turned to for wisdom and strength to endure and the truth that God was faithful through it all.

Do you need help and direction during difficult times in your life or times of natural disaster, or during societal upheavals in general? Are you going through a time of despair or wish to know how to help someone else going through such a time? I recommend reading this short, easy-to-read booklet. It can easily be read in an hour or two, although it will take longer for those who like to ruminate over such material.

It follows the life of one adult in history (Elijah from the bible's old testament) as he meets the challenges of 1) berating a weak corrupted king, 2) surviving a long drought and famine (part of that time alone in the wilderness), 3) helping a poor widow through her time of need, anger, and dwindling faith, 4)beseeching God to return a dead child to life, 5)destroying the idols his people were worshipping, and finally 6) fleeing in despair and fear for his life from the vindictive unrepentant Jezebel.

Though many of us will never resurrect someone to life from the dead, nor be in a position to need to ask for such a thing from God, many of the other things experienced by Elijah are parts of our own journies through life. Most people go through times of feast and famine (though these words are relative), times when we want to (or actually do) question and confront authority figures who are corrupt or simply making wrong decisions for society, times when we feel angry or full of despair or overtaken with fear.

This book uses a simple ordinary man (Elijah) as a model for how we can address issues like these when they arise in our own lives, by calling on the inner strengths of courage and faith which God provides us all with, helping us to ultimately overcome our frailty and triumph over conflict. The book is inspiring, presenting positive and practical answers to real life issues, encouraging us to rise up to where we can be in life.
