One of the things that really struck me as I read "Trusting God with St. Therese" is the amount of spiritual ground Connie Rossini covers in this book. She makes it very easy for the reader to grasp the spirituality of "The Little Way". I'm not sure I've ever read a book quite like this. The format is unique in that it not only leads us through defining moments in the lives of both St. Therese and the author's but also shows us how to incorporate the way of "trust and love" into our own lives. The book breaks away from formats used in traditional saint and spirituality books while at the same time giving the reader a big glimpse into the life and spirituality of one of the greatest saints in the Catholic Church. There are many books on St. Therese out there BUT NONE LIKE THIS. The chapters in this book cover areas such as: the three spiritual stages, signs of a lack of trust in God, despair and how to overcome it, forgiveness, suffering, dealing with emotions, scruples, presumption, etc...
I can't count the number of times over the years I have read a book on Catholic spirituality and at the end have felt as if I am still in the dark as how to integrate what I have learned into my own life. Not the case with this book. I found the "Questions for Reflection" and "Practical Suggestions" at the end of each chapter extremely helpful. (This would be a great book for book clubs!)
Trusting God with St. Therese may possibly be the most spiritually significant book I have read in years. I highly recommend it.
"Trusting God with St. Therese" also touched on a specific niche of St. Therese's spirituality, obviously trust. Rossini challenged me to rethink my lifelong perspective of what it means to trust God by specifying St. Therese's simplicity in accepting God's will in ways both ordinary and extraordinary.
The two most profound points I found in reading this book were: 1. St. Therese asked God for a kiss each time she sinned; 2. St. Therese believed that souls who go to Purgatory are the ones who believe in God's justice, while souls who go to Heaven believe in God's mercy. I found these to be bold declarations of confidence in God's love, and I realized that I have never truly adopted this confidence for myself. Rossini is careful to point out the dangers of presumption, however, and does a magnificent job of differentiating between Therese's confidence and sinful presumption.
Rossini is also an excellent researcher; she incorporated her knowledge of over a dozen books into this volume without sounding clinical or redundant. She also cites her work using APA style and does so with clarity and accuracy. I find this to be an added source of credibility to her authorship.
"Trusting God with St. Therese" can find you anywhere in your spiritual journey - whether you are in your spiritual infancy or spiritually advanced. Regardless, Rossini showcases this beautiful, simple, "little way" through the gift of St. Therese's reflections of God's profound and interminable love for us.
I loved how the book was structured. At the beginning of each chapter, I found myself looking forward to reading about the life of St. Therese. I read "Story of a Soul", which I also highly recommend, yet I learned so many new things about St. Therese in this book that I didn't know! In fact, St. Therese came alive in every chapter as I read about her daily struggles and trials in life. The "little way" of St Therese - we can learn SO MUCH from this amazing saint, especially when we compare the ups and downs of her life, with those of our own. Connie Rossini related each lesson from St. Therese, with her own experiences, and they were touching, heart-wrenching at times, extremely personal. I found myself crying with her as she walked us through the car accident that took the life of her sister, yet I felt amazed at the strength of her parents accepting God's Will in this tragic loss of life. There were so many lessons to be learned in this book. I had to stand back and look at things in my own life and ask myself, do I have THIS kind of trust in God?! I WANT to have this kind of trust in God, so I kept reading. At the end of each chapter there is a section of questions for reflection. I found myself not only reading those questions but trying to answer them. I REALLY wanted to take what I just read about St. Therese as well as what I just read about Connie Rossini's life lesson and reach deep down and find something I could relate to in my own life. I learned something about myself in every chapter! Following this she offers practical suggestions to help you grow in your faith and trust in God. For example, "At the end of each day, thank God for the many blessings he sent, even if it was a day of struggle...." How we forget to do this over and over again but what a wonderful thing for us to do. Maybe those struggles that He sent us that day were for our own spiritual growth? Only God knows what is best for our souls!
Lastly, I wanted to share that I personally have struggled with trusting God at times. I look back on my life and I have wondered many times, how do I know that God has forgiven me for sins that I feel are unforgiveable? I don't know if it's scruples or just my lack of faith. I put the book down when I finished it and I told myself that I was going to start trusting God in a different way then I ever have before. I immediately went up to my daughter's room and picked up a crucifix that has always been very special to her. My daughter is a Carmelite nun. At that moment, I spoke to God and told Him I found a new trust in Him and I hoped that I would be able to know that I have indeed been forgiven and can begin anew on my Catholic journey. I kissed the crucifix and put it back on my daughters desk. I then opened up my Facebook account and right then and there, I saw this "Do not let the past disturb you - just leave everything in the Sacred Heart, and begin again with joy." - Mother Teresa. To understand how profound this was for me you would need to know that my daughter's religious name is Sister B. of the "Sacred Heart of Jesus". She always tells me "I'll see you in His Sacred Heart!" I always wonder how I can find her there. Now I know - by Trusting God!
Connie Rossini has written a classic. I found a new joy, a new lease on life, an understanding for my own personal past sufferngs and I learned how I can truly trust in God, through not only St. Therese, but also from the author's own life experiences and reflections. If you want to grow in your Catholic faith and learn to trust again, don't hesitate to get this book. It could be life changing for you, as it was for me!
