Editorial Reviews

Review

As a novelist, Jeanne Gehret has a genuine flair for deftly creating memorable characters and embedding them into an original and consistently entertaining story. The descriptive writing brings a bygone era in American History to vivid life. An impressively crafted and consistently entertaining read from beginning to end, The Truth About Daniel is unreservedly recommended, especially for community library Historical Romance collections and the personal reading list of the dedicated Antebellum romance fan.--Midwest Book Review

Endurance, Determination and Resolve: Susan B. Anthony, therenowned 19th century reformer, had several younger siblings, andthis historical novel brings to life Daniel Read Anthony, one of her twobrothers. The settings are varied, ranging from Edgartown, an old whaling porton Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts, to Saratoga Springs, New York andLeavenworth, Kansas. Each locale provides a unique backdrop for the story ofDaniel Read "D.R." Anthony and Annie Osborn, his future wife. The courtshipbetween the Civil war colonel and the much younger woman from a prominentfamily is largely conducted long distance and becomes a central theme of thestory set in the mid-19th century. The plot reveals the earlierrelevant events that shaped the lives of the central characters.
JeanneGehret's varied career includes writing and publishing children's literature, including a book on Susan B. Anthony. To this new adult title she has addedfictional details to documented historical events. One chapter, entitled "Teawith Miss Anthony," is an imagined meeting of the Anthony siblings, Susan andDaniel and the young Annie is Saratoga Springs, where the couple met.
Thewell-paced book will pique readers' interest in critical historical events suchas slavery and the settlement of the west. It pays careful attention tocapturing the mores and manners of the time.--Life in the Finger Lakes
