Amir Said starts with basic info about the five boroughs; how Manhattan is an island with a grid, how Robert Moses plowed through the Bronx, how Staten Island is a mob residence, how Brooklyn is getting more love than ever before, etc. Some things in here I don’t believe, like the part about NYC being the place for jobs. Illegal immigrants take a lot of the jobs in restaurants and construction, and most of the tech jobs are done by unpaid interns. Obesity is not a major problem here, because everyone has to be on their feet.
He does give some humorous pages to renting an apartment in the city, with all the down-and-dirty about rent control and how the landlords try to scare away tenants. He advises the renter to discard the dream of a spacious apartment, and avoid any place with a commute of more than 45 minutes into Manhattan. Stay close to a good public library (decent people in the area) and avoid police stations (they’re placed in high-crime areas.) The subways are how people get around, but they are unreliable, filthy, overcrowded, and prone to delays.
The book goes on to cover dating, food and dining, nightlife, culture, education, and religion. Sometimes the writing goes too far, some parts are too long, each chapter could be its own book. Some parts, like the one on schools, would be better if they included interviews with parents, maybe have a part about schools where the White kids are a minority.

One of the greatest things about living in NYC is walking into a neighborhood or down a block -- that you’ve been to many times before – and discovering an entirely new world. That’s how I felt reading ‘The Truth About New York’ by Amir Said. I’ve lived in NYC for more than 10 years now. I consider myself a New Yorker, and I know the city quite well. But I must admit, after reading ‘The Truth About New York,’ I learned a LOT, and I realized just how much I didn’t (don’t) know about this great city. I wish I had known certain things that are included in the book, like the lay of the land and the chapters on friendship and dating! It definitely would have made my first couple of years in the city a much easier transition. For Europeans like myself -- for anyone really -- who’s ever dreamt of moving to New York, this book is a must read. Actually, I think this is a must read for all New Yorkers.
Among the many things that make ‘The Truth About New York’ a standout for me is that Said doesn’t sugar coat anything, and every topic in the book is tackled head on. New York is known as one of the world’s greatest cities, but there are lot of misconceptions of New York that most people hold dear. This is another thing that I like about ‘The Truth About New York’: it addresses many of the myths and misconceptions about New York and gives a raw, insightful look at how things really are in NYC. Further to this point, no topic is taboo in ‘The Truth About New York.’ From a serious examination of NYC’s housing crises to gentrification to race & class to nightlife to multiculturalism to sex in NYC, Said holds no punches and presents NYC as it really is. Which is also to say, he offers something distinctly different and much more than what your typical travel guide tries to show you about NYC. But even though this book is geared towards what Said calls “long-term visitors” -- people who relocate to NYC -- I also think it would be helpful to those vacationers who want a more local NYC experience.
I’m happy that there is a book that shines a light on NYC’s composition with such deft detail, insight, and nuance. And to be honest, I’d become somewhat disillusioned with NYC. But ‘The Truth About New York’ has reminded me why NYC is so attractive (despite its drawbacks), and it has certainly rekindled my love for NYC.

Europens have certain Vision about New York City. New York is THE City number One for business , for fun, for an outstanding time. And all this we can read in standard travel Guides. But this is not enough, because New York City has different faces and that faces I experienced first time with reading the book „Truth about New York“ from Amir Said. After several years living in New York, i could say, I know New York very well. But since I read the book of Amir Said I changed my mind. I was so suprised how limited my knowledge was. I was living in the box, and seeing New York just from one point of view. I thank Amir Said for "opening my eyes" with his book. After reading his book , I learned a LOT about gentrification, races and classes, relationships and sex and much more. Definitely an outstanding book! I read several books about New York, but non of them gave me such „eye opening“ view. If you want to move to New Yorkor just visit it, no matter for how long and for which purpose,, you should to read this book!!!!
The book is for everbody: short term and long term visitors, people who want to move temporary or permanent to New York, for just visitors, as well as people who might never visit New York but want to learn about „real New York“. I wish , Amir Said translates this book in other languages , because this book must be studied. I thank Amir Said for his great contribution to present the world The Real New York.
Definitiv hervorragendes Buch!! Obwohl ich in New York City Jahren lang gelebt habe, erst das Buch von Amir Said „The Truth about New York“ hat mir ganz eine andere Perspektive von New York City gezeigt. Das Buch muss gelesen werden!!! Das beste Buch über New York, das ich je gelesen habe, und ich habe viele Bücher über New York gelesen. Es ist für Alle geeignet die Name New York schon mal gehört haben.

This book captures every aspect of New York, the good, bad, and ugly. Great reference book for both people who've lived in NYC or just visiting. There really great examples of the many layers of NYC. I felt it was written specifically to my experiences as a young woman. It resonates with all people.. across all gender, race, and socioeconomic boundaries. There is so much relevant information in the book.. specific to all the diverse neighborhoods in NYC. Gave insightful and valuable information about, dating, sex, education, dining , race, and everything in between...in NYC.. well written, thoughtful, interesting, and very useful information to help anyone understand NYC.
