In contrast to the previous review, I will attempt to give a serious and moderately detailed review of this excellent set of volumes.

St. Thomas Aquinas, the "prince" of the Scholastic theologians, wrote a great deal in the course of his relatively short life. (He died in 1274, just short of fifty.) His best-known works are his two Summae, the Summa theologiae (hereafter to be referred to as the "ST") and the Summa contra gentiles. Of these two, the former is of course the more famous to most people the least bit familiar with Aquinas. In addition to these, however, he wrote a number of opuscula; a Commentary on the Sentences of Peter Lombard; Commentaries on the works of Aristotle, Boethius, and Pseudo-Dionysius; Commentaries on a great many books of Scripture; and seven Disputed Questions, as well as a collection of Quodlibetal Questions.

(For a list of all of St. Thomas' works, complete and in primarily Latin-English format, see the excellent resource at dhspriory. To reach that website, search Google for "dhspriory thomas"; it ought to be the first result, titled "St. Thomas Aquinas' Works in English." Apparently Amazon does not allow links to outside sites.)

Before I get into detail, a note on the availability and worthwhileness of this work of St. Thomas is called for. This work is available in its entirety in the above link (parallel Latin and English) and I use that site regularly when I wish to quote extensively the De veritate or refer to it online. Some, then, might wonder why I even bothered to buy this set. I suppose that the simplest answer is that I am a bibliophile. I would much rather read from a physical copy than from a computer screen, as I much prefer the feel of a book in my hands.

Thomas Aquinas cites a number of things God can't do, as change the past. I have seen Captain Kirk do every one of them.
