Wow. Lucinda Basset has been (and still is) someone who I always admired and who has given me strength for almost 20 years. I bought her program "Attacking Anxiety and Depression" before I was pregnant with my daughter and my daughter just turned 18. Over the years I have carried the skills I've learned and still remember the mantra "I am safe, I am calm, I am relaxed. Nothing else matters now", from the "Relaxation Session" cassette tape. Yes, cassette tape. haha. This program seriously saved my life and I feel started me on the most amazing path of healing and self rediscovery.
Like I learned in this book, a trait also owned by Lucinda, I am also fascinated with successful people. I had always wondered what had happened to her and what she was up to now. (Because her program was such a success). I googled her a few years ago and when I had learned that her husband David had committed suicide I was floored. I was floored because as I had learned and listened to her stories in the weekly tapes, David was the strong one. I always remember when she talked about saying that "What if nobody liked her" and David said something like "The people who don't like me can get in line". So to hear that such a strong man and the husband of THE self help anxiety and depression guru had taken his life, it's a shock.
I guess you can't help but wonder WHY. And the book helped me to realize that I wasn't the only one who wondered. It was weird because even though I obviously didn't personally know these people I felt a connection because of the profound healing that had taken place in my life because of them.
It was a beautiful story to read. She had briefly talked about Sammy on the weekly tapes and I had wondered what was going on with him and that was reveled in the book. I was mind blown to read about the depth of her upbringing as that was another thing she talked about "Living in the brown shingled house at the end of a dead end street". To hear the details of what that was all about was also deep. Hearing of her sister's journey and hearing and learning more about her mom was beautiful and sad.
Lucinda has got to be one of the strongest women on this planet. She has endured so much. Wow. What a warrior. I love her even more to see her prevail, open up, make her self TOTALLY vulnerable and share such a personal story.
I pray that life has shifted. Sounds like she is definitely on a beautiful path of healing and newfound happiness and success.

This book deserves five stars. Period. Lucinda's honesty and bravery is admirable. What an incredible woman. I literally read the book in a period of 24 hours. I admired her candor her honesty and her willingness to share her life's deepest darkest secret's including the death of her husband. I have known Lucinda, or should I say, heard of her through The Midwest Center for stress and anxiety since I was in my teens. A couple of years ago while I was researching the Midwest Center again to buy some material I encountered an article about the suicide of her husband. My first reaction was pain and agony. I just wanted to hug her and cry with her. This book details her core story but it goes beyond that. It details how a women that has been abused, hurt, betrayed, can grow to be a women who can nurture, who can heal, and who can remain faithful to her family, to God and to herself. This book is an incredible story of an incredible woman. This book is the epitome of what Lucinda has done with her life. This women has given us such a gift. She has gone through hell and has made it back. Everything, from her attacking anxiety and depression program to her previous books have gone through the fire and have shown us that they are Gold. I am going through a hard time right now and feel alone and lonely at times. Reading this book was SO helpful to make me realize that there is always hope and always a light at the end of the tunnel, even if the tunnel seems to go on and on and on and.......... It's sometimes hard to believe that so many things can happen to one person but if you live long enough you realize that this is just part of life too. Lucinda is incredibly strong and I have to thank her for just laying it out there and being blunt about it. I am so glad that I bought the book. It really helped me to try to get myself moving forward AND in reading her book I realized I might have a bit of an anxiety thing going on that I wasn't even aware of. Who would ever think that you could have anxiety issues and not even know it?? This can blunt your return to wholeness so I will also be using her advice (and the Midwest Center cds) to work on that too. I will edit this review when I see for myself how conquering the anxiety works!

I found this book interesting for the most part, but somewhat depressingly too realistic at times. I totally related to Lucinda's childhood, having suffered much of what she describes: growing up in poverty, the unstable alcoholic father, the too tolerant mother, and worst of all enduring the sexual abuse. Like Lucinda, I too suffered for years with anxiety and depression and had to find my own way out of the maze using my creative mind. I admire her honesty in putting it all out there, even the suicide of her beloved husband. I also share this similarity with Lucinda, however, it was my ex-husband who commited suicide and we were divorced at the time. Lucinda states in the book, she wants to write a book strictly about suicide and I hope she does, we do need more and better books dealing with the topic. This book is very helpful to people who share many of the same issues and the ending is very inspirational and hopeful to anyone dealing with the loss of a loved one through suicide.
