You will have to read Truth or Dare to find out what happens to Maria, Gabriel and the gang. Enjoy!
Antonio was a romantic, but had gotten mixed up with one of the biggest gangs back in the day; they had been her family too, but Antonio had promised Maria that he would get out when Rodney was born. Now he was dead, killed in a drive-by. Maria is a single mother, working several jobs: as a parent, she has three missions in life; to keep her son alive, make sure he doesn’t get into trouble and give him whatever he needs to make a life for himself. For 7-years Maria has been harassed by the same gang for money she knows nothing about. Maria had not heard from Gabriel since Antonio’s funeral; as soon as he had paid his respects he left and didn’t look back. In Seattle he lay low until he had enough money and clout to come back to Portland to do what he promised. After Antonio died, Gabriel left his old life behind and for the past 5-years has been building up legitimate businesses. Antonio and Gabriel had been targets long before the drive-by happened, so each had made a pact. Gabriel’s was that he would look after Maria and Rodney; even willing to give them his name if necessary. For the past 3-years Gabriel has been paying off Antonio’s debts on the understanding nobody would bother Maria or Rodney. Nevertheless, the gang are under the assumption that Antonio had money stashed away when he died and believe it is theirs. Maria had moved on from Antonio’s death; her life now was about making sure Rodney grew up away from the gangs and with his love of video games he has so much potential. Maria may have been Antonio’s girl, but it didn’t mean that Gabriel didn’t love her. This man had the power to completely destroy Maria if she got too close: they were attracted to one another; had history, shared a love albeit different kinds for the same man that had influenced their lives long ago, but Maria doesn’t believe Gabriel is telling the whole truth. Something else happened; would he even dare to tell her what it was. But no matter how many times Gabriel tells her he is an honest man, she doesn’t believe him. Confronted as to why he was still wearing the gang’s tattoo, Gabriel confessed that it was a reminder of who he used to be; he cannot let himself forget the life he once lived or the promise he made Antonio. The gang need to know Maria is under Gabriel’s protection, Maria knows they will never leave her alone even if they were to get their money. Maria had been worried that her son would not be able to adjust to having a pseudo father figure in his life, but it was Maria who has the most trouble adjusting. Yet if there was anything Maria had learned in life, it was that gifts didn’t come without a price. Until then she tentatively accepts her new life for the sake of her son, but when she hears the truth of Antonio’s death it is not easy to accept. Maria has to stop dwelling on the past and the present; the most important thing was the future. Maria has to plan the next phase of her life, but would this include Gabriel? My Rating: 4.6 stars *****
“I received an advanced copy of this book from the author at no cost to me."
This book was fast-paced and full of suspense. Every time I thought I knew where the story would go, it go somewhere completely different. This series really has made me suspend my preconceived notions on what arranged marriage is and how each person approaches it.
