James Patterson has had a number of successful collaborations with Howard Roughan, a versatile and critically acclaimed author in his own right. Roughan brings a considerable cinematic vision to the table that, when combined with Patterson’s penchant for creating remarkable, often frightening characters, makes for a guaranteed enjoyable and exciting reading experience, containing startling and unexpected plot twists and turns. Their entry into the 2015 summer vacation reading extravaganza is a stand-alone novel titled TRUTH OR DIE, and it transports the reader’s focus away from the here and now into a world of dangerous and deadly intrigue.

Trevor Mann is a former (as in disbarred) attorney who lost his license to practice for betraying the confidence of a client as the result of an act of conscience. Now reduced to the still-noble but less glamorous occupation of law school professorship (in Ethics, no less), he is dating a winsome reporter named Claire Parker, an investigative journalist who goes all out to get a story. Trevor finds himself in very unfamiliar territory when a story that Claire is investigating suddenly brings personal tragedy into his life. He is determined to find out the reason behind the disaster, and in doing so initially picks up where Claire left off while having no real idea of what she has been working on.

Trevor learns soon enough when he encounters a 17-year-old boy named Owen Lewis, who is on the run and in fear for his life. Owen thought that he was creating a cure for Alzheimer’s disease but instead found that his discovery was being used as a truth serum. The serum is highly effective when it works properly, but it has a very high failure rate, with “failure” defined as the death of the subject.

This is the worst book James Patterson has written. It is difficult to follow. It is strange. It goes from bad to worse. I am three qquarters through and not sure i will finish it

Aloha, I have read all of James Patterson books. I found each one exciting and enjoyable, until now.
This book was like going to CNN or NSNBC and listening to a bunch of crap.
What happened to James? Did he forget why his readers read his books in the first place, that is, the thrill of danger. I hear about the SOBS in Washington all day long on the news. This was the last thing I wanted to read. I should have found out more about the book before I bought it.
Now I feel I can't trust James again for a good read. "Bummer".
I give this book a 2 .star. (For what I don't know)

I believe the only thing that sold this book to me was having James Patterson's name on it. It is only worth three stars because it in not a book I would recommend. My suggestion is Patterson get back to writing his own books and not put his name on another author's book as he has been doing recently.

Total waste of money. This book is a rehash of many other books by many other authors. No original plot, no excitement, no twists, no suspense, no drama - in short nothing of interest. I've never been this disappointed in a book in my life. Patterson must be slipping or he let the co-author write the entire book. Either way, it is not what I expect of James Patterson and am very disappointing.

TRUTH or DIE by James Patterson and Howard Roughan. Our protagonist, attorney Trevor Mann, has only recently found meaning to his life following some personal and professional setbacks. He and his girlfriend, prize winning journalist, Claire Parker, are headed for a beautiful life when tragedy strikes. In pursuit of Claire’s journalistic leads, Mann discovers a shocking secret that he must, at all costs, keep out of terrorist's hands. Working with NSA and CIA, and at times finding himself on the wrong side of law and order, Mann, with the help of a brilliant teenage geek confront the many deadly roadblocks thrown up against them. The first part of the story is a bit confusing but I very much enjoyed the last two thirds. If it is action you want, Truth or Die has it in spades leaving dead and injured spread across its pages though often with measured humor. I thought the reality of the story was a little over the top but not unusual for this genre. The writing is crisp and witty, written in the first-person with a staccato beat. Typical of Patterson’s novels, I suspect he provides the story line, his coauthor writes the story and Patterson edits. At least the author is upfront about it unlike others who hide that fact.
Truth or Die is a good story with new and charming characters I hope to see again. I give it a 3 ½-point rating.
