I remember stumbling across the author's other book, The Game, a few years ago. I'm a woman and the description of the book immediately made me think of this womanizing ex-coworker of mine, who used to brag about his conquests as if he's reaping the rewards of the unresolved daddy issues of these beautiful women. And it all worked because he knew a thing or two about manipulation and games. Needless to say, I rolled my eyes and move on with my online book shopping never expecting to read any of his books. Recently, an author I do like and subscribe to, sent an email about this book and bits and pieces from the book. I got a bit intrigued and decided to purchase this to diversify my book collection, which is starting to look lopsided subject-wise. When the book arrived, I started to read it and couldn't put it down.

The Truth is intriguing, funny, heartfelt, sometimes annoying and whiny, sometimes makes you want to go up to the author and smack him upside his bald head, and other times you root for him, empathize, and sympathize. And truthfully, you want the happy ending. It is a roller coaster ride of monogamy, psychotherapy, various alternative relationships, orgies, and harems. The author has the writing ability to take you on a journey with him as he bares the entirely human side of him, flaws and all. He is not always like-able but you stick around to see what happens to him. And sprinkled throughout the book are some interesting situations that you wouldn't otherwise witness, some thought provoking questions, and bits and pieces about attachment theory and psychotherapy that the reader can think about and look into while reading this book.

The author has a simplistic style of writing and it is an enjoyable book to read. However, there are times his self-deprecating humor goes too far and it can become self-loathing. He sometimes put himself in situations that are obviously bad and selfish but he does it anyway, other times he's this awkward guy that starts to annoy you, or he whines and self loathes for pages and you just want to swiftly kick his behind. Then you realize, this is a book about one man's journey in figuring himself out and what type of relationship he wants to have in his life so he's not going to get his poop together until he figures some things out. Along the (mis)adventures of Neil Strauss, you do get some laugh out loud moments, some eye opening moments, and some thought provoking moments. I never thought I would say this but I would recommend reading this book.

Really loved the book

Really loved the book! Neil is a genius in explaining his inner thinking and thoughts. The brilliant thing is he speaks out the desire, addiction and fear of every man, and analyse it in an analytical way.

No doubt this is the best release after "The Game". It is a must-read if you want success in any relationship and creating your best self.

Such a strange book. It is well written but not fun to read. I guess a book on relationships and fidelity might not be that fun. But sometimes I felt like the book was his therapy not for the reader.

I wasn't quite sure what to expect when I started reading the book. The prerelease material was sending very mixed messages. I wasn't even sure whether it was going to be narrative based (it is) or more of a self help book (there's a little bit of that too). Despite this, I picked it up on release and devoured it. The biggest thing about the book is it is shockingly honest. Neil has always bared himself and his insecurities but in the Truth he takes it to a new level and most importantly, comes out the other side. Read this book you won't regret it.

Honesty is not always pretty

Honesty is not always pretty, and Strauss wrote an extremely honest book and the best on relationships that I've ever read. To change underlying hard wiring in your brain from childhood is a difficult, and means throwing out the survival mechanisms that you relied on. It's not a direct path, but a slippery climb where it is easy to fall back (repeatedly), which Strauss does. Even recognizing the need for change is not enough. Our subconscious gravitates back to dysfunctional safety mechanisms--and there are so many justifications and arguments that we can make to support them. Heck, there's a lot of exactly such intellectualizing in many of the more negative reviews of the book. It is much easier to criticize Strauss than to thank him for sharing his painful journey.

Game Over

While Neil already wrote a quasi-how to sequel to The Game (Rules of the Game) this is that books true companion and really answers why The Game even exists or why Neil even went on that journey. It's a more mature books than its predecessor and it makes me happy that Neil is still out there growing and searching to be a better man.

Also, I want to compliment Neil, the editor, and the designers of this book. The illustrations, comic book renditions of Neil, and just the attention to detail and graphic design or all top notch. It's always a pleasure to read a book by Neil because everything has an amazing presentation (seductive, no...).

One of the best books I have ever read and I have read hundreds of psychology books

If you are a Neil Strauss fan or not, you will love this book. The man is a great writer and very honest. Do yourself a favor and read this book. It is a psychology book. After reading The Game, I thought he really had his act together. Could not have been more surprised to find out he copped to being a sex addict and went to rehab. He did some hard work on his self and ended up happily married with a child.

The great thing about this man is his willingness to become emerged in different realities and scenarios. Its a sign of a truly talented writer in my opinion, to go places few have been and report back with such a clearness that we dont have to go there ourselves. Hes a teacher, and straight up. Thanks for solving the puzzle. A light house for seagoing "normal" men and players to figure out the riddle of "having your cake, and eating it too".
