- Reviewed in the United States on August 23, 2018A fascinating read for sure. It's interesting to see how those who created Social Security truly knew what they were doing. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to really understand today's debate over Social Security (and Medicare).
It's essential to have the facts about Social Security. Too often the loudest voices give us their opinions stated as fact with no information to back it up. This book will give you the information and facts you need to understand the reality of Social Security and just how important it is to all of us.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 8, 2023I found out a lot that I did not know, and I believe should be taught by high school. We need to know the facts, our rights, and so be prepared to protect the money that we are setting aside to assist in our senior years. This is what Social Security is, and it's collected from our paychecks every month for that purpose only. As we have seen clearly, from certain persons supposedly serving constitutients these days, it is necessary that we guard our money.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 22, 2018Nancy Altman's latest book on Social Security should be required reading for every Baby Boomer, concerned about their own future or the futures of children and grandchildren. I am a Boomer, retired somewhat early due to health problems, and concerned that my savings won't last. This book explodes the myths that the right-wing media purports about Social Security past and future. I particularly appreciated the charts and data in the "Yogi Berra" chapter. I am so tired of hearing all the false information about a system that probably saved my widowed grandmother's life. She lost her husband in 1934 and was left to raise three children. She worked as a waitress to make a living and raise her children. Social Security benefits made all the difference for her in later life.
It is absolutely true that as Altman says, Social Security should continue to expand in accordance with its values. Perhaps every member of Congress should be given a copy of this book to fully understand what that mandate was and how important it is to the future of our country. Fully recommended for Boomers and anyone interested in justice and a solid social safety net.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 5, 2019The reason I purchased this book was because of misinformation regarding Social Security that I've heard throughout my adult life. The financial terminology was somewhat difficult for me to get through. I guess my biggest takeaway from the book is an argument to use when younger people tell me that "it's definitely not going to be there for me!" and that is to say that it already is! The author helped me to understand that Social Security is wage insurance and not welfare and that they are already benefiting from having it in case the unfortunate happens and they are unable to work or that their children will benefit if the unthinkable happens, in other words they have some financial protection. I've seen it help so many people and can't understand why this isn't discussed with honest discourse by politicians and the talking heads. Thank you for writing it, we can't allow politicians to take this financial security away so that someone can profit from it's replacement.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 19, 2018Social Security is a topic on which one can find many myths and untruths (such as the program is going bankrupt). This book, written by someone who has in earlier years written both an excellent history and a programmatic defense of Social Security, is the perfect antidote to the common lies. Ms. Altman's deep research shows how the originators of Social Security explained the program; how they defended it against the same set of lies and misunderstandings; and why their vision still animates the program. This book is an excellent resource for citizens who want to be fully educated about Social Security, as well as for serious researchers whose efforts will be aided by Ms. Altman's impeccable work. Bravo!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 27, 2021Must read for any who want to save social security from G.O.P. and elite in are country like some crazy people don't want social security around
- Reviewed in the United States on December 31, 2020I was concerned that Social Security funds were being abused by our elected officials. It was a relief to read this book (written by a very knowledgeable and well respected author) , and find that SS funds are protected by laws. Read it, and understand how the system actually works. It is INSURANCE, folks. Always has been, and continues to be.
