Before I started reading this one, I did a re-read of Want Me, just so I could be familiar with the characters again. It made me realize how much I loved that book, actually, and it made me uprate to 5 stars instead of the original 4 I gave. So, getting into this book I had HIGH expectations, and to be honest, it never really met them. But, having said that, it still was a fine, solid read. Very well written, hot and sexy, but also with a story and a romance, kind of everything I hope to find when diving into a story.
So what made it that it didn't meet my expectations?
I can't even tell exactly. First, it took me a while to get into the story. To get the feeling of Mark and Chet. It wasn't there right away. These were characters that had to grow on me. Eventually they did, though, and when that happened - I think somewhere the second half of the book - I really started to enjoy the story. I wanted to know how they would reach their HEA and how they would be able to make sure Mark's dad wouldn't ruin everything they had.
Their chemistry was hot from the beginning, really, really hot (!), but I just found it hard to connect to them and I can't really tell why. I love Neve Wilder's writing, in the end I loved the story too, so nothing wrong there.
I guess I maybe just wasn't in the right mindset. My mood took away the pleasure of reading the first part of this story. But eventually I did feel invested in what happened to Mark and Chet, and after that I couldn't put the book down. So the 4 stars are solid ones, definitely deserved. And who knows, when I start a re-read some time in the future, I might decide to uprate this one too. If you are into friends-to enemies-to lovers you will enjoy this book, I'm sure. And I still look forward to book 3 in these series!

Really liked both MC's Chet and Mark, and it was well-written as per usual by Neve, but there were a few typos and little niggles. The Ponzi plotline reminded me of Tom's dad in Off Campus, which I also rated 5 stars. Mark's dad was a complete arse, controlling and mostly unpleasant, although I suppose he thought he had every right to tell his son what to do, seeing as he was the mayor, in charge of his own very successful business and was paying for everything his son had...well, guess what? You don't have that right.
Chet was a wonderfully complex character, although I can't really say I was in love with his name 😏. He was having to work with what he'd got, bearing in mind that he and his family had been shafted by his crook of a father and he was now working a few jobs just to put himself through Uni. Mark was his best friend growing up, and when the s**t hit the fan Pyncho senior-wise, it transpired that Mark's father had helped the FBI with their case.
Not giving anything else away, the story is well worth your time. Can I just say that I'd LOVE Cam to get a HEA of his own too??
