This album is amazing!!! Victor Smolki (producer, composer and guitar player) has done again an outstanding symphonic power metal album. I saw Victor performing for the German Rage band. Since I saw him performing in 70,000 tons of metal in 2010 I began to buy all Rage CD's, (Welcome to the other side, Soundchaser, Unity, etc. Inclusive, the last one of Lingua Mortis Orchesta) and I have never listen guitar solos and riffs the way he does.He is a clone and a mixture of the best guitar players of the world. To be honest, this album is amazing...... This is his new project since he left the band Rage. So, he still mainting his brutal attacks of guitar solos and beatifull music arrangement that can be heard by everyone, inclusive, my kids usually sing the songs of this album while I am driving!! Outstanding Album.

Strong performance throughout. All vocals, musicians and production is spot on perfect...these guys did a flawless job in my opinion. Not sure what category one would 'try' to put these guys in...power metal, progressive power...something like that. A great line-up in the band, it's been on repeat in the truck going thru 1200 watts and 2-10" JL audio woofers @500 watts each, sounds awesome. Pick this one up, you won't be sad.

This band will hopefully get more attention soon. They describe this as symphonic power metal but they really don't sound like other symphonic metal bands. The riffs on here will get your head banging. If you like the German band rage you should like this. The subject matter deals with historical events. Sort of similar to the Swedish band Sabaton. If you like classic metal or power metal you should be able to get into this.

Guitarist/composer/producer Victor Smolski (ex-Rage, ex-Lingua Mortis Orchestra) launched a new project earlier this year titled Almanac. It’s a symphonic power metal group featuring a trio of very impressive singers: David Readman (Pink Cream 69, ex-Voodoo Circle), Andy Franck (Brainstorm, Symphorce) and Jeanette Marchewka (ex-Lingua Mortis Orchestra). If you’re thinking “hey, that sounds like Avantasia with fewer singers,” you’re not wrong. And that’s not a bad thing at all.

Tsar is Almanac’s first album, and it’s a concept album focusing on the historical figure Ivan the Terrible. It makes for a suitably epic story to match this very powerful, very epic album. Smolski has written a larger than life metal album that takes advantage of his singers’ distinct voices as well as capturing both the heaviness and melody you look for in a power metal album and the symphonic, bombastic elements of a good concept album. It doesn’t hurt that he turns in some completely dazzling guitar work here.

The vocals are what put this already excellent album over the top. Readman’s performance alone would be worth the price of admission. So would Franck’s. Having them both on the same album is power metal bliss. Marchewka has a smaller role, but also sounds fantastic.

Since it is a concept album, Tsar works best as a cohesive whole. It does have its share of standout tracks though, like “Self-Blinded Eyes,” “No More Shadows” and “Reign of Madness.” For the most part, the songs hover around the 6-minute mark, so they have a big presence without ever dragging on.

If Avantasia hadn’t released their amazing Ghostlights album earlier, Tsar would be THE symphonic metal album of 2016.

Symphonic metal at it's finest. The vocals are incredible as is expected with Andy B Franck and David Readman laying it down. The guitar, wow, the guitar... Victor Smolski is a fire breathing dragon with some of the most eye popping, jaw dropping solos you can fill your eardrums with.. Easily the most incredible guitarist that many have never heard of. Get this disc people, if you even like metal, get this awesome record!!
