Well, this is definately the most cohesive of the four soundtracks available for The Tudors.

In the first season we are introduced to a very strong and inspiring theme (An Historic Love) where, regardless its similarity with The Last of the Mohicans "The Kiss", it's still a very nice work of art. The tone of this album is light and inspiring. There is, however, one big drawback to this season's soundtrack: its length (very short for 17 dollars at least).

Then comes Season 2: darker, not as inspiring as the first and much more somber and complex. There is no strong beautiful main theme in this album, but there is a lot of variety in the styles Trevor Morris executes (and he executes them all quite well). There is more music in this album (almost twice compared to the first) and the use of female choirs is a very nice trademark of this season. Dark, varied and lengthy.

Season 3 introduces one of the most beautiful themes in the whole Tudors series: Jane Seymour's Theme. Apart from this cue, which one part resembles James Horner's A Beautiful Mind main theme heard in "The Prize of One's Life" (listen to "A Howling Wilderness/Jane Seymour's Death"), the album is mostly flat, or without much contrast. It is sad to realize that, apart from this beautiful haunting theme (the most beautiful in the whole series for me), the album is probably the least enjoyable. It has a lot of church choirs and is again dark, somber, but less varied than Season 2 which makes it monotonous to listen to. If you take out Jane Seymour's theme and all of the different interpretations of it (including Jane Seymour's Death, Jane Washes her Hair, etc.) you will have the worst of the four albums.

Trevor Morris delivers his final effort on the series as it comes to a close after 4 seasons. Looking at the series as a whole Morris really used each season as a stepping stone to take his music higher and higher. I'm not saying that each season's score got better and better (they all stand as part of a whole), but much more developed and grounded as the characters grew especially Henry. While there are central motifs that anchor the series and make their way from score to score it's really the themes that Morris has written for the women in Henry's life that flourish.

Last season we heard Jane Seymour's theme, which was a huge part of that season's musical soundscape. It's also one of the most beautiful and chilling themes embraced in romanticism that you will ever hear. For this season Morris wrote a much quieter theme for Katherine Jewel. He also touches base with The Tudors main theme that you hear in the titles. That theme while used sparingly in the middle seasons makes a more rounded return here. The score definitely builds as you listen through. He also uses interesting textures in certain tracks. For instance in the track "A King's Procession" the percussion almost sounds like horse hooves (at least to me). It creates a firm marching beat that really stood out to me.

The album takes a turning point with the track "Henry Arrives In For War". The tone shifts into a more aggressive action tone, but even after the action cues the tone is most definitely different than the first half of the album. Morris plays heavy strings that carry so much weight. We get a much more fuller sound. If you want to label it as "epic" you probably can because it carries a lot of emotional weight.

The last few tracks are extremely beautiful as things come to a close.

I was a little disappointed in this soundtrack because I noticed like the other soundtracks seasons, all the songs were not added. I was looking for the song when Katherine was giving the king a puppet show and then they went into a romantic love scene shortly after that. Songs like this where not added to this soundtrack. I've search the internet over and over to find this song and still I came to a dead end. I found most of the other missing songs from the other soundtracks. But that too was a lot of time and effort to do the searches.

This album is absolutely beautiful. Each track flows into the next seamlessly and it goes from romantic to intense, to chillingly haunting. This has quickly become one of my favorite scores and I listen to it quite often. Definitely something that should be added to your collection.

Just in case you already own the other 3 seasons of The Tudors soundtracks and thought you might pass on more of the same, let me assure you that this is not more of the same. Unless by more of the same you mean amazing work by Trevor Morris, then yes, it is more of the same.
I didn't think anything could top the Jane Seymour theme from season 3, but the "execution ballet" in this season certainly comes close. It makes you feel bad for thinking Katherine Howard's giggling was annoying.
The rest of the tracks are also quite strong, particularly the music for Charles Brandon and the Anne Askew tracks.

Loved it so much that I ordered the other three. What is so great is that, for the main part, each "song" could stand alone, so that it was less as a background music to a film number, but rather could be heard as an individual piece of music as with any other music disk.
