1) TAPE AREA: Use masking or painters tape to define the area of coverage. 2) PREP: Use the sand paper provided to scuff the coverage surface. Proper surface preparation is critical to adhesion.

How to Apply Tuff Toe: Steps 3 and 4

3) EQUALIZE TIP: Tuff Toe is a two-part application that comes in two conjoined tubes that mix in the applicator tip. You must equalize the tubes before application. 4) APPLY TUFF TOE: Hold the boot with your left hand (if you're right handed) and begin on the left side. Apply slowly from the sole to top so that the material will stay thick and not run.

5) REMOVE TAPE: Immediately remove the tape. Pull carefully so that you don't mess up the application. 6) ROTATE: Rotate the boot for 1-2 mins with the toe tip pointed down to allow the material to spread evenly and avoid runs.

7) CURE FOR 24 HOURS: Material will be 80% cured after 90 minutes, but please allow 24 hours for a full cure. IMPORTANT TIP 1: Use Comet or a deglazing chemical to prep oily boots. IMPORTANT TIP 2: Tuff Toe will dry with a glossy finish. If you prefer a matte finish, wait for 30 minutes, or until surface is slightly tacky (not sticky). Rub your finger across the Tuff Toe and the sheen will disappear.

This stuff practically ruined my husbands brand new $400 pair of red wing steel toe boots. Watched all the tutorials and read all the instructions beforehand. Had two of us working together to apply it. First coat had a few bubble holes that appeared so we added a second coat on top of the hole areas, then came back to find this disastrous bubbly mess. Ordered $38 dollars worth of replacement material and a gun to try and see if we can sand it and do another layer so the boots are presentable at work (firefighter), so we will wait and see how that turns out. Contacted customer service and their solution was to send me a $9 partial refund. What an absolute joke. So I’m out $58 and my $400 brand new boots look like absolute crap, and the best they can offer is a $9 refund. Save yourself a lot of frustration and money, and find another product. This one will just screw you over.

Replaced the toe on ten year old hiking boots in about an hour, and went hunting the next day. Only words of advise is make sure you squeeze out a nice long line before you start, the only part that didn't cure perfectly was right where I started on the first boot and I thought I had mixed enough in the applicator. No problem, I just wiped off the uncured spot with a shop towel put a new applicator tip on and filled it in, doesn't look perfect, but I don't need it to. And if you don't want the rubbery sheen then wait 20 min after application and just rub your palms all over it for a more standard look. All of this is explained in the video online. You need to watch that video.

Used this protector to provide some coverage to some nice hiking boots that did not come with any covering over the toe. I have only put the product on at this point - have yet to expose it to things like freezing conditions, heavy water/rock clambering. I would say the posts about the challenge of using the plunger system they include is real. It definitely takes some grip strength especially if you decide to go for more complete coverage such as going around the sides a bit. They tell you not to cover flex points but I was seeing damage all around the toe from some early hikes on granite rocks and thought it would be fine lower down on the sides. Ended up being plenty of extra goop to do so.

Once you go to town on the leather with the sandpaper, you are committed. The nice thing is that the product is thick enough that painter's tape serves as a good barrier and peels off clean. I ended up with a thick back edge - no way that I know of to smooth that down ... it may end up catching and tearing off. Time will tell but this stuff is like liquid cake frosting and really piles up.

Watching the video doesn't really give you a sense of the challenge of keeping the tip in the liquid and pushing out a consistent bead. I ended up with some valleys in mine -- looks like some high school kid did it as a science project. You know, if you don't look too closely it's fine. I think it will function ok, but it doesn't look anywhere near the quality that the main guy does in the video. I pulled a star for the crappy design of the applicator.

Nice thing is that the shine does wipe off just like they say at the 15-20 minute point. It's kind of like wiping film off of a pair of sunglasses or something. Of course if you have little valleys you sort of have to get down in there to do the job.

As for suggestions:

1) consider picking up the dispense gun if you care about a really clean finish on the boots or if you wouldn't be comfortable, say, holding the rope for a buddy repelling off of a cliff for like 5 minutes straight. In my case I have a $1.50 looking toe cap on $500 boots. Maybe if you heat the stuff a little bit it would help.

2) take your time. this stuff sets up pretty quick but if you rush you will definitely screw it up. my second boot was a lot better than my first because I wasn't worried about the painters tape being trapped under there.

Far superior to KG BootGuard - very tough material / adheres very well

I tested this on a well worn pair of XtraTuff II Alaska 5" Sneakers that I wear everyday. As a heel striker I'm very rough on heels and I was able to rebuild the heels with just a little masking tape as a self levelling guide. I repaired the toes that had been protected with KG BootGuard when new. You can see remnants of the KG BootGuard in the photo. KG BootGuard may be fine for light use but for the beating it takes on a farm it did not last. I redid the completely worn out toes with TuffToe and they are holding up well. I like the product so much I used it on 3 new pairs of the same shoes. Next I'll try attaching a hard plastic cleat to the heel strike area to see how this product acts as an adhesive and to help slow down the heel strike wear. Be nice if it was a little easier to buy the refills since I already had the 2 part epoxy dispensing gun but I love this product. Good prep is the key. I used the supplied sandpaper, blew off the dust and wiped down the to be repaired areas with denatured alcohol before application.

So dissatisfied. I've used this product for years and have struggled with their garbage forever. This te a giant strip of product never hardened. Called support and they said it sounds like a mixing issue and to buy more and re-apply. If they know their product comes with a crap application system that doesn't properly apply 100% of the time then why not fix it? I used jb weld to hold it together and oce I find the jb that won't crack like the one I have did then I'll just use that on my next pair.

I used this product on both of my size 10 steel-toed work boots. I was concerned there might not be enough for the toes of both boots, but it was no problem. I was a little smoother doing the second toe. In the picture I've included, I could have extended the toe application a little further back to the edge of the original black toe fabric. You can see the one on the left is a rougher; that's the one I started with and had to "go back" over some areas to try to even out the application. Watch youtube videos and follow the instructions to keep the tip of the applicator in wet edge as it's being applied. I did the application in July 2018 and have been wearing them ever since. (I don't wear them every day, but they've been on my feet for at least a couple of hundred hours -- working in the woods, doing odd jobs, etc.) They have held up completely; no lifting at the edges or tearing away; they are as good as the first day I used them. When using the applicator, it's a little awkward at first with the plunger all the way back; as it gets pushed in further it gets easier to control the tip; it would probably be easier if I had bigger hands!

Used the product to protect the toe on my curling shoes. Product works well providing a smooth surface on the toe of the shoe producing less drag when sliding. Instructions are straight forward with useful videos available on both the manufacturer's website and on youtube. I found the plunger on the applicator difficult to use which is probably why they recommend you buy a special applicator gun if you plan to protect a lot of shoes. Kit comes with 3 applicator tips, sandpaper, plunger and one cartridge. The cartridge is only good for 30 days from the date it is first used. Cartridge contains enough product to protect two shoes.

Edit: Uploaded picture. Original review stands. Picture is after about 3 months wear, and 500kms of walking, on and off equipment, etc. The Tuff Toe caps have taken a beating but are holding up to severe abuse very well.

As a railroader my boots take a severe beating. I made a double application to the toe so it was thicker where my toe wears, thinner on the sides. Product was easy enough to apply. Since applying I've walked about 250k steps (175km) and been climbing on and off equipment all day. This product has help up quite well considering the abuse my boots suffer! Product does as advertised, and holds up. Good way to save your boot toes!
