The Tuft & Needle Mattress
Why We Started Tuft & Needle
JT had just gotten married and he and his wife set out to buy their first piece of furniture together–a new mattress. The search began at local mattress showrooms; vast fields of mattresses neatly laid out under the buzz of fluorescent lights. Pushy salesmen pushed them to buy a fully loaded, feature-rich memory foam mattress. For $3,300 it should have been the pinnacle of comfort, but it wasn’t. To make matters worse, the return policy rendered it impossible to return. It was like car shopping. Actually it was worse than car shopping.
At work the next day, he shared his story with Daehee. The two friends from college had been working together at a company in Palo Alto, and unsurprisingly had similar experiences. There was work to be done.
We believe that business can be honest and premium products don’t need remote controls and payment plans. Especially not mattresses.
An overly soft mattress provides poor support, bends the spine unevenly, and traps heat.
Not too soft, not too hard, our mattress evenly and comfortably distributes your body weight.
A too firm mattress doesn't correctly align your spine, and leads to uncomfortable pressure points.
No Tossing, No Turning, Just Sleeping.
Our foam adapts to your body weight, distributing it across a large area to create that float-like sleep.
Just the right rebound, without that quicksand sink-in or disturbing your partner.
Custom Foam, Crafted Right
Over the past couple years, we've created a new foam based purely on customer feedback, unparalleled in comfort and support. It's not memory foam or latex. It's Tuft & Needle foam.
We Sell Directly To You
We manufacture our products honestly. We cut out the middlemen so we can offer you a great product at a fair price.
Made With Care in the United States
We believe in quality craftsmanship without the gimmicks.
We work with the best to get the best. And then we sell the best, for exactly the price it should cost.
It’s the very simple system at the heart of everything we make.

I want to be clear that I'm not disputing the raves others have had. My blogger friends are 20-something skinny-hipsters while I'm a more ample Gen-X type. But three months in, it's become impossible to sleep on. The center of the mattress, while no visible indentation is present, has softened so much that it compresses significantly and quickly under my hips as soon as I lie down. By contrast, the pressure on my shoulders is beyond firm - which, as I'm a side sleeper, can be pretty uncomfortable. It's not possible to lie on this mattress for more than 2 minutes and maintain a neutral body posture. It's a pain in the neck. Literally! Again!
As I said, the mattress snows no visible indentation, so I don't think my problems fall under warranty or defective product. But I wanted to put this out there & let you know that if you're a chubby side-sleeper, this probably isn't the mattress for you. Pity.

After the second night, I encountered the same problem. The big problem came when we returned it. If you purchase directly from T&N, you get to try the mattress for 90 days verse 30 days if you go through Amazon. Here's the BIG problem- Amazon requires you to box up the mattress before UPS picks it up ( no cost to you). This is easier said than done. The mattress is vacuum packed at the factory. Once you cut open the bag, it naturally inflates to full size.
Getting it back in the box is impossible.
Finding a king size mattress box was harder than expected. Our local Uhaul store had nothing and mattress stores typically don't keep old boxes on sight. I ended up purchasing a poly bag for the mattress at the Uhaul and, using a shop vac, sucked out enough air to roll the mattress small enough to fit in two large boxes. It took my whole family of 5 to accomplish this feat. What a pain. If we had purchased directly off the T&N website, they would have had someone pick it up and we would have avoided the whole repackaging nightmare.
If you haven’t heard, theres been a big boom in direct to customer mattress companies, who cut out the sleazy mattress salespeople who work on commission and sell you garbage mattresses for thousands of dollars. I love the fact that now you can buy an awesome mattress, for a fraction of the cost, and have it shipped straight to your door in a box.
So, will you like a foam mattress if you have always slept on a regular spring mattress?
Short answer, YES! This opinion comes to you from the point of view of someone who has done the exact thing you are about to. I only slept on regular spring mattresses all my life. I thought that I would buy a foam mattress and simply sink into it, be extremely hot, etc. That is not the case. A foam mattress, at least for me, is definitely comfortable.
I have to say that I am impressed by the Tuft & Needle, not much downside for the price of 600$. The one thing i found was that the tuft and needle was a little on the firm side for me (Im a 185lb guy, so i assume if you weigh any less you will find it even more firm than I do), and the problem is you cant order or exchange to one that is a little bit less firm. Theres only one standard option.
OK, I realize this review is effusive, maybe a little too much. But I'm not exaggerating when I say this is truly one of the best major purchases of my life. By now, you may have heard the hype about the company Tuft & Needle. Or perhaps you're stumbling onto their product for the first time. Either way, you should go ahead and click "Buy" right now. Seriously. Even if you're not 100% sure about `em. You'll understand why by the end of this review.
Last year, my wife and I started mattress shopping. We were upgrading from a queen to king. We had so-so mattresses in the past and wanted to do it right, find something that really worked for both of us. You know the cliche: "you spend a third of your life in bed"? Yeah, well it's true. Now, my wife has woman hips, I am thin and straight. Also cliche. We thought we needed a customizable bed to be truly comfortable, so we tried a SleepNumber. Bad mistake. It really is just two zippered air mattresses, with no localized back/hip support.
So we returned the SleepNumber (for which we had to pay shipping, but I suppose it was worth experimenting). Shortly afterward, I stumbled upon Tuft & Needle. As a new company, they didn't have a large online presence, but the extremely high Amazon ratings caught my eye. Then I saw the free 30-day return policy and said, hey, why not?
One week later, we received our package in the mail. It came vacuum-sealed so we carefully cut the seal and it literally "popped" into place. Instant sleep-ready. Slapped on the sheets and proceeded to sleep like babies. One year later, we are still very happy customers.Read more ›
