Even with soaking, the yarn virtually repelled the dye so we had to squish it in which of course made color control almost impossible. The end results were gorgeous all the same.
I followed the directions and wore the plastic gloves. I set up a large plastic tarp and did the dyeing outside. I applied the dye to the dampened yarn. Much of the dye ran right off rather than being soaked up. This created puddles, which spread across the tarp and then soaked into my feet. The dye bottles sprayed/squirted all over and splashed my shirt (just a tee shirt from a big box store, but still). The puddles escaped the tarp and got onto the concrete.
The dyes also puddled under the yarn, making a big, ugly brownish black mucky color on the bottom.
The directions had no information about how to clean up any spills you might get on your skin or surface. I assume my shirt is done for since it is made of cotton and this was a cotton dye.
The only reason why it gets one star is that there indeed was enough dye for the four skeins of cotton that I purchased.
