Some things I learned for next time:
* The blue is VERY dark. The bottles come with pre-measured amounts of dye already in them, so for the first time we just had what we had. But next time I think I will only use 1/2 of the blue dye packet so that I can get a lighter/brighter color out of it.
* When working with kids and dye, CONTAIN EVERYTHING! The nozzle on the bottles is wide enough that as soon as you tip it the liquid starts to leak out. We had some splattering and our patterns came out a bit messy. And because we did the project in the winter, I lined my bathtub with a plastic table cloth from the dollar store to contain the mess.
* Apply your colors lightest to darkest, being liberal with the lighter colors and more conservative with the darker colors. Especially the blue, which seemed to behave similar to black and just take over everything.
Overall the colors are good, the directions are good, and the project was super fun. I would definitely purchase this kit again.
We did about a dozen shirts and each one turned out unique and individual in the design and colors.
Colors didn't bleed too much, just the amount I thought they should. Children created the shirts in my pictures and not one turned out brown or messy. Each one turned out great and had an individual personality to it.
My grandmother's shirt was voted the best (she's pictured in the wheelchair).
I'd buy and use this product all over again. Ease of use and cleanup were so simple.
See my attached pictures for what exactly comes with this order. Each color bottle is pre-filled with powder (and you just add water and shake). And then there is an additional packet of each color. I ordered more rubber bands. Depending on your design, there may not be enough in this package.
Wondering what kit to buy? If you get just 1, I would recommend "carousel" because this has the darkest colors that give the most "vibrant" results. If you get 2 kits, "carousel" plus "rainbow" gives you 10 different colors, therefore the greatest choice when you are making your shirts. Unfortunately, you can only get orange if you buy the "luau" or "neon" kits. For some reason, the 5-bottle kits are the cheapest per gram of dye (cheaper than the refill kits that don't even have bottles). Wait for them to go on sale, the price on Amazon varies a lot from one week to the next.
Can you really get 30 shirts from one kit? Yes. But they won't be 30 adult 2XL. And you have to plan ahead--use all of the colors in the kit, dilute some of the colors, and catch the drips in a basin to re-use. I usually dye a half-and-half mix of adult and child shirts together and end up with 30 from a full kit.
Can you dilute the colors? Yes, some are very amenable to dilution. Some of the best looking items I have made are serial dilutions of just a single color. These colors tolerate dilution very well: black, purple, turquoise. These colors tolerate a modest amount of dilution: blue, fuchsia, violet, lime, royal blue. These colors don't dilute well (don't bother trying): red, orange, yellow, teal. I do the dilutions in glass jars and use a plastic funnel to get the dye back into the bottle.
Best dye technique. Put the tip of the bottle in contact with the shirt before you squeeze. Put the tip in between the folds. After you think you are finished with the piece, check between the folds to make sure that you don't see white; if you do, go back and dye the insides of the folds. After wrapping in cling-wrap, squeeze the piece--this also reduces excess white. Dye should not be dripping off of the piece or staining your gloves--if so, you are using too much dye.
Finishing the piece. The directions on the kit say to wait a couple of hours to let the dye set. This is not a good idea. If you only wait a couple of hours, you will lose most of your dye down the drain and you will be shocked at how light and faded your piece looks. Much better to use the basic principles of chemistry to your advantage: remember, time and concentration drive the reaction forward, so wait as long as you can, and then lay the piece out to dry without washing. I wait a week, then spread the pieces out on the lawn to dry in the sunlight. After that, I run the whole batch through the rinse cycle in the washing machine about 6-8 times (until the water looks clear), then line dry, then wash in a normal wash cycle (with soap). This way, the finished piece comes out almost as dark as when you dyed it. And you can skip the hand-rinsing that you see in a lot of YouTube newbie videos, that is just too painful and there is no advantage to it.
Be creative and have fun! There are some very good YouTube videos to teach you how to do this, just hunt around, you will find them.

Leider fehlt eine Anleitung was man genau machen muss.
Looks a bit complicated but it really isn't.
It is totally brilliant and we will be buying loads more...
She even wants to dye a duvet set and socks and swim costume.. lots of ideas she has..
We did have a mess so we used puppy trading mats underneath the tops which I suggest you also get as the ink stains whatever it touches..
Brilliant and fun and easy... recommend highly
Also we found if you top up the dye with more water after using a little it goes a lot further so more tie dye ! 😁
After dying the items we carefully placed them in zip-lock sandwich bags and placed them in the airing cupboard overnight. The next day I opened them up and rinsed them off thoroughly in cold water until the water ran clear, and then repeated this 2 or 3 more times leaving 5 minutes in between. The colours came out absolutely fantastic and i could not be happier with the results!
On a side note we ended up using a lot of the die - probably around half of what was provided so dont expect to get lots of items out of the kit if you want the colours to look great. It's better to go overboard and rinse it out.
*Main problem I had is that the additional green dye pack was not properly sealed, so spilt into the inside of the kit - all over everything else in the box. A right mess. With children keen to start the project, I had to push ahead, otherwise I would have returned the item and asked for a replacement.
It's great to use alone and even get kids involved, the bottles it comes with are super easy to use and don't leak.
I will be back for more and more.

Great purchase! Great fun to use!
