Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreS-As in Tumford the Terrible (Feiwel & Friends, 2011), the appealingly mischievous cat is causing havoc. His human parents are about to host a party, and he has been making loud and rude noises all day long: beating his drum, slurping his food, burping, and generally trying to get attention. The final straw comes when the guests have arrived and Tumford makes a very rude noise and is banished to time-out. The text invites readers to tell Tumford that not all attention is good, and he reforms himself. The Stoutts reassure him that they love him in spite of everything and promise that he can sometimes be silly in private, so Tum "with a grin mostly sweet and sincere,/made a rude little noise into Georgy's left ear." Tillman's illustrations are wonderful and her black-and-white cat perfection (in looks, not behavior). He looks like a real feline with sometimes human expressions. Readers cannot help but love him just as his parents do: "madly from whiskers to toes." With its special message that even those who misbehave will still be loved, this book will surely entertain and reassure all the little Tumfords out there-cats and toddlers! Not to be missed.-Judith Constantinides, formerly at East Baton Rouge Parish Main Library, LAα(c) Copyright 2011. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. Review

“This book will surely entertain and reassure all the little Tumfords out there--cats and toddlers! Not to be missed.” ―School Library Journal

“Even more of a draw than the original.” ―Publishers Weekly

“The photo-collage illustrations are large and expressive--much like Tumford--and will tug on heartstrings and amuse in equal measure.” ―Booklist

“Kitty cat (and human boy stand-in) Tumford Stoutt learns a lesson about rude noises. This Tuesday, Sweet Apple Green is in for a ruckus. Tum beats his drum. He makes bubbles in his dish. He burps and giggles at the table. His parents aren't pleased, but Tum doesn't care. He likes the attention. Then in front of the Sweet Apple Guild, Tum does the unforgivable: toots the patootie trumpet. Mom and Dad put him in timeout. With a little help from readers, Tum learns not all attention is good.” ―Kirkus Reviews

My 2-year daughter loved the first Tumford book, so I recently bought this one, thinking she would love it, as well. In typical Tumford style, he's in his rare funny form making mischief and creating havoc, which my daughter loved....that is, until we got to the page where he is picked up by his nape and tossed out. That page so upset my young daughter that we can't read the book again. Who would have guessed? Maybe my girl is just extra sensitive, but the picture is a bit disturbing to see the cat being dangled in mid-air and tossed out. But the rest of the book is the usual Tumford being his giddily mischievous self and, now that you've been warned about the page, you can always just skip it!

BOUGHT THIS FOR MY GRANDDAUGHTER WHO IS 15 MONTHS OLD, AND SHE LOVES IT. THE ILLUSTRATIONS ARE ADORABLE. I'VE PURCHASED SEVERAL OF THE NANCY TILLMAN BOARD BOOKS FOR HER. WHAT GREAT WAY TO INSTILL A LOVE OF READING.

My grandson was captivated by Tumford the cat who got into trouble doing all those things little boys do. I first borrowed the book from the library but had to buy the book so my grandson would have a copy to keep. With delightful pictures and rhyming verse it is a perfect book for reading aloud or for a beginning reader to enjoy. Nancy Tillman knows how to connect with little kids in a gentle, loving way.

I was disappointed. If I'd read through the pages, I would have determined that the moral of this story would be lost as it doesn't apply to our situations. I quickly ordered it based on Ms Tillman's other wonderful books.

My daughter and I have been a fan of Nancy Tillman since my daughter was 2 months old. Her style of writing is always fun and gentle, and we especially love Tumford. He is the perfect character for a toddler to identify with, and the message in this book is conveyed with perfect humor. Most of all, as a parent, my favorite message is that children should be loved...no matter what "noises" they make.

My first book by Nancy Tillman was Tumford the Terrible. My youngest grandson, age 2, loved it so much that I immediately started looking for others like it. Fortunately this came out just a short time later and is an even bigger hit than the first. I would highly recommend it.

We have another "Tumford" book, and bought this one based on our love for that one. Both have are written in rhyming verses, and are a pleasure to read out loud. The books have a moral and try to teach kids to behave. In this book, Tumford ruins a party with his attention-craving behavior and is punished (with a time out).

I gave the book 4 instead of 5 stars because it is not quite as wonderful as the first one.

Attention is desired by all, but as this delightful book demonstrates there is positive and negative attention. An excellent way to explain this to young children and old children(like me--gee it's fun being a kid!). I truly appreciate and enjoy this author and it's nice to be reminded, as she does, that you are loved.
