A rare miss from Tumi - very poorly designed polycarbonate piece with limited features for the price.

Before I dig into this new piece of Tumi Polycarbonate luggage, let me open by clarifying that I am a luggage junkie. I have around 15 different pieces of Tumi luggage, as well as everything from the latest Rimowa pieces to TravelPro and eBags. I have no problem spending well on a top notch piece of luggage.

This new Tumi "19 Degree" bag is the beginning of the end for Tumi. For those who don't know, Tumi has been purchased by Samsonite, and while they are not exactly a ultra-budget brand themselves, they are most definitely not in the same category as Tumi. There is no other way of describing this 19 Degree bag other than "junk". There isn't a single part of this bag that is in line with the quality you should demand from any piece of $600 luggage. Every part of the bag, from the zippers to the wheels is just poorly made. There is no hanging component, only a single pocket on each divider, wheels that don't roll smoothly, a Tumi Tracer that I can't find, and cheap pieces of foam on the inside to protect the padding from scratching against the rivets.

I've purchased $50 polycarbonate that is better made than this bag. The bag lacks basic features like free-extending handle (so you can adjust it in any height), unlike this one which only has 3 settings. It also lacks any kind of add-a-bag option.

Tumi marketing lists a whole slew of "features" for this bag, including some kind of magical Japanese coating which is made to prevent scratches, but for the end user, there just isn't anything really good about the bag.

Spend your money elsewhere. If you must have polycarbonate, consider a Rimowa Salsa or Salsa Air (both cheaper than the Tumi), and if you must do Tumi, upgrade to a more traditional piece.

PROS:
- Well, as soon as I pulled this out the box, I thought to myself- What a good-looking bag. The design is not only pleasing to the eye but also strengthens the bag structurally.
- The wheels spin smoothly, and are doubled-up for strength.
- A free service called- TUMI TRACKER uses a upc symbol which can be scanned by airport authorities to locate your lost bag anywhere in the world.
- The pulls on the zippers are replaceable, so if you ever find that they have been snapped-off due to rough baggage-handlers, write to TUMI to get your replacement zipper-pulls and They will tell you how to replace them (I have not had to do this yet).

CONS:
- Yes, it is a bit pricey but if you have the money, spend it on quality products such as this bag.
- There is no side-handle. There are times, such as when going up or down stairs during which I prefer to carry my luggage horizontally so as not to bump against the stairs.

FYI:
- Tumi's parent company is Samsonite. In my opinion, it is the luxury version of Samsonite luggage.

This is a great carry on. It moves smoothly, it has double zippers inside to ensure your lugagge remains secure. The outside is hard, and very pleasing to look at. I am very satisfied with its durability and aesthetics.

However, I must admit that I am absolutely baffled as to the price tag. I have used many a carry on in my day, and as of now I cannot tell what sets this one apart. It looks, moves, and feels just like a carry on at 1/5 or 1/10 the price.

This suitcase has really held up well. I have taken it on several trips and it is sturdy and well built. It is a good size-not too big and not too small. The hardsides definitely give extra protection. I do love the special Tumi Tracer feature but I had to call customer service to help locate it. They were extremely pleasant to deal with.
I only gave it four stars because it is extremely expensive for a suitcase. Even for one that lasts and lasts.

I ordered two different sizes of this carry on, and this is the slightly bigger one of the two. You shouldn't have problems on most domestic flights, except for those little US Airways/Republic commuter jets. I haven't tried it on that yet--the biggest (or smallest) test of overhead space. The slightly smaller international Tumi carry on Tumi 19 Degree International Carry-On, Copper is your best bet, but this may do the trick as well.
The bag is attractive and has separate compartment, but only two--one in each lid/door. Note there's also no place on the outside of the bag for newspapers or small items. This bag is more about looks than function, but it doesn't sacrifice completely in function. It has two zippers, with fine handles, although I now have 3 different Tumi bags and am surprised that the zippers are not, um, stellar. They are sturdy, but this bag and another one I have both have experienced zipper snags--could be me, though.

This is a pretty basic composite-shelled carry-on bag, and due to that fact, the pricetag is outrageous. It's attractive, I guess. It has an integrated lock, which is nice, okay. No frills when it comes to the interior -- zippered dividers is all it has. I had no problems with the wheels; they're the standard plastic ones, nothing great. Plus, the handle is less sturdy than carry-ons I've purchased for 1/4 the cost of this one.

It's an all-around average bag. It's also extremely expensive. I cannot in good faith recommend this carry-on at this price point. If it drops to something more reasonable, it might be worth consideration.
