I prefer to travel with carry-on luggage for expediency through the airport/flight, to prevent lost luggage, and enhanced items access and security. This is my first Tumi and first impressions are positive, with one gripe.
First the good:
Quality: the bag has a very high quality in build. The material seems top notch, and well stitched. Zippers seem strong and are sealed from weather. I cannot comment on how well the zipper pulls will stand up to the luggage handlers and carousels; the pulls usually tend to get caught and ripped out...
The size is perfect to outstanding for overhead luggage storage in the cabin. This bag is especially optimized in fitting the maximum amount of items in the airplane's overhead compartment, and to do so it has been "bulked up" more towards the top end of the bag, while the wheel side is a little slimmer. As a result when the bag is inserted in the overhead compartment, wheel side in first (this is the intended orientation) the slimmer end of the bag fits deeper in the compartment, while the top and bulkier end of the bag takes up the more available space that's closest to the aisle, which otherwise stays unused in the outer end of the compartment. Good trick, and good execution. This arrangement would be top heavy and can potentially compromise the stability of the bag, but so far I have noted no such issues...seems Tumi added capacity to the bag, while solving this potential stability issue of a top-heavy bag.
The exterior pockets are good and very useful. Someone else noted the first pocket is not double-zippered (with double pulls) and that is a valid observation and a concern, although minor.Read more ›
I purchased the mist silver one and really like the design and color. More aesthetically pleasing than the regular Tumi bags in my opinion.
Update 6 July 2012
Just back from a three day trip with the tumi. A real pleasure to use. Everything about the build is solid and smooth. It never threatens to topple even when fully stuffed. It is pleasing to the eye too . My one small gripe is insufficient pockets inside the main compartment. There are plenty outside but only the main can be locked. I'm not a big fan of travel but this tumi makes me almost look forward to my next trip!
Btw, it's nice to see that this product is no longer discounted!
Update 22 Mar 2013
Just back from a 5 day long trip in HK - when you're bloody tired and can't wait to get home, you just don't want to deal with luggage problems. That's where this Tumi excels: the wheels are smooth, the bag doesn't fall over no matter how badly I pack it, it looks good and feels good. Worth every cent and more.

Very happy with the design, quality, and looks of this product. I had another Tumi bag before this one that lasted 10 years. This one looks just as good of quality.Published on April 27, 2013 by David Corley
I haven't used this enough to decide whether or not is is exceptionally durable. It is well designed, the handle and wheels are superior to any others I've used. Read morePublished on April 17, 2013 by Jim Leslie

It's a modestly priced Tumi..and an excellent bag. It beats anything else I've seen in this price range.
