This is my first review but I will surely update if the pump ever goes bad.
Reason you shake the pump is too take out the air from the pump and to technically prime it. It's not science....
I have a 75g tank with a 15g sump. This little guy is meant for a nano but with a sump this small this guy reads up to 1/8 of evaporated water. Will recommend this item to anyone who has a sump I don't think the size of the tank matters as long as you locate the item inside the sump.
My skimmer is working full time; Now that I bought this auto top off system . I had to drill it and have it drain into another container because it is constantly pouring out junk.
Ohh wow I wrote a lot....oops. #dont judge my writing skills. <3
This unit is basically a piecemeal of parts that they throw together and overcharge for. I haven't found a better solution for my 40g tank though. I suppose I might as well pour the water in myself...
A couple of things to note: you'll need to prime the pump after each water source replacement. I usually just kindof shake the pump until it starts going again. Also make sure the sensor is free from debris. This can be hard to ensure if its sitting in a refugium with algae. The sensor cover is usually good enough, but I have had instances where a piece of algae made the sensor stick. In short, keep an eye on it every once in a while.
Sooooooo...... while away on vacation I get a call from the person watching my tank and says it is making a horrible noise. The top off unit failed to keep tank topped off. A simple fix was to unplug unit and plug back in and it began to work. Since that incident it now seems like a daily issue. I have placed a ticked with the manufacturer and am still waiting to hear from them (only been one day now) I know nothing is perfect and things go bad like my reef light that died on my while away also. Sh*t happens I guess. So that being said if there is another unit you have been looking at and is a bit more money I would go with that. Also there is not local or 800 number to contact Tunze support.
I am giving two starts because unit worked well and I may have just gotten a bad unit.
