I have been using TT for several years and with the exception of the issues in 2014, which almost made me go to another product, I have been mostly satisfied with the software. Like I have for most years, I am using the Deluxe edition with one state for this year. I have used premier in the past because I originally thought I needed it for my investments but discovered over the last few years that I could do just fine with Deluxe. As far as I can tell, the 2017 version of TT deluxe is essentially the same as the last couple of years with the same included forms (yes, the investment forms for your 1099-DIV are there) . That is ok with me as the same familiarity in functionality makes this an easy exercise when I am doing my taxes. I installed TT with all of the current TT updates (which is revision 9 as of Jan 1, 2018) on a computer using an updated (as of the time of this review) Windows 7 computer with no issues. Intuit stopped supporting XP about a year ago, so if you are still using XP, you might not have luck with the CD version of the software and may need to use the TT web site instead.
I still have some of the same gripes that I have had for a long time with TT or rather Intuit’s business practices. I think they intentionally create confusion with their multiple versions and efforts to get you to upgrade to a more expensive version, which in a lot of cases is not needed. For the last several years, my taxes have included investments/mutual funds, which the deluxe version handles perfectly fine, especially if you can automatically interface with your bank or investment company online. Since approximately the 2013 version TT deluxe has the ability to download and import your investment information directly into the program. Intuit tries to make it seem like you really need to upgrade for stocks and investments and in reality, for most cases, it isn’t necessary. There may be some particular reasons to get the premier or home/business version as everyone’s situation is different, but I have found for most standard investment stuff, deluxe is just fine. You will have to judge for yourself, if you have something unique that may require a more expensive version. I personally suggest getting the Deluxe version and then if you have any issues with the investment portion or have other specific needs, opt for the upgrade to a higher version, which you can do afterwards, if you get into the program and find that you need additional guidance.
The TT promotion is the same as last year’s, which is a starter version of Quicken 2018 for one year. I really wish they would go back to the bonus deal that included a full version of Quicken deluxe that used to be offered and not a starter version for one year only, which isn’t really beneficial to me. You have to get the bonus from within the TT software. Price-wise, I waited until the price dropped to 39.99 for the Deluxe plus state which is roughly the same as last year’s price I paid.
Although TT is basically the same software year after year, there are still bugs that seem to occur with each new version of TT. There were a number of updates with last year’s version all through the years. Last year, Intuit was pretty sloppy with providing a history log of the updates and stopped updating the history log list on their website at one point prior to the April deadline, even though there were several updates that occurred afterwards. I am not sure whether that was intentional or not as I could not track the number of updates or what fixes they did until the end of the year (49 updates or patches in total). This year it appears they are making the update history log harder to find and only providing a link to what the current update fixes and not the previous revisions’ fixes. This year TT has 9 major updates are at the time I write this review. Some of those are tax form updates or adding of forms that the IRS has just released of course, but there are a number of program updates that you would think that the for the most part would have been fixed before tax season starts and prior years. Note: Turbo Tax only initially updates to Revision 7 and stops updating for some reason. Revision 9 has to be manually updated via Turbo Taxes website due to an error in the automatic update feature of TT in order to fix that bug and continue getting updates.
I am always cautious in that respect and wait to file several weeks into tax season to wait for a good portion of updates and bugs are worked out. As with previous years, I am concerned that Intuit is still issuing program updates after the April tax deadline. This year, I am more concerned due to the introduction of the bug that stopped updating the program. Intuit doesn’t seem to be notifying customer of the updating issue either as I just happen to find the patch when I was looking for the history log of the 2017 version.
I also wait to file because of my investments. If you have investments/mutual funds, it is a good idea to wait a few weeks into the new year as well because, depending on what company you have those investments/mutual funds with, 1099-DIV information tends to get updated with adjusted totals around late February or March which can drastically alter your tax totals.
I still have my complaint about the additional cost of e-filing with the state (currently 20 dollars) which in my opinion should be free with purchase. If you have to file taxes in multiple states, then you have to pay for the additional cost (I believe is currently 40 bucks) to download that state’s forms as well, which I think is excessive. Even with my gripes though, this is a better cost option for me than the major tax retailers, but the cost of TT has been going up steadily year after year.
As I have previously mentioned, the TT interface is basically the same and hasn’t changed much over the last few years. Even though I have my complaints about Intuit, I like the way the software walks you through the different things to help you finish the taxes pretty accurately. It is quick, easy, and I haven’t had any issues with the software doing my taxes. In past years, I sometimes see the occasion bug that pops up from time to time but that has mostly occurred with the error checks when it is verifying that you have no errors. Luckily, there has been no calculation errors. This is the first year, I have seen an update bug.
I have been mostly satisfied with prior versions of TT Deluxe each year (with the exception of 2014) and I am likewise with the 2017 version as he deluxe functionality is all there. With the continuing updates, I would suggest waiting a few weeks before filing to make sure no critical bug affects your tax filings. Make sure you do a manual update from the Intuit website to get revision 9 and fix the update bug as well.
Update: After seeing some reviews that indicated install and use issues with Windows 10, I decided to try TT on a laptop I have that has the latest version 1709 of Windows 10. I had no issues with installing, updating (although you still have to do the manual update to Revision 9) and using the program. Whether this was an early issue with the program, I cannot say, but as of Jan 2018, the program works with no issues on Win 10.
I am returning to update my review. I see that the problems have continued to arise for customers. I returned the software to Amazon and received credit. Don't know what I will use now but may simply use the paper IRS forms we used years ago as soon as they come available after the implementation of the new tax laws. It's incredible to me that Intuit would risk losing so much of its market through changes that made the software inoperable for so many customers.
For years, the Deluxe product has included both Schedule C and Schedule SE, which are essential to filing taxes if you have any income as an independent contractor, clergy, or sole-proprietorship. If your business is simple, these forms are all you need - but TurboTax now requires that we pay DOUBLE for the "Home and Business" edition to get access to Schedule SE (self-employment tax). Check the list of forms included - Schedule SE is only available with Home and Business. I don't need all of those bells and whistles! I just need THESE TWO FORMS. Why does it have to be so hard? So disappointed.

I had an iMessage conversation with a Turbotax representative regarding the Sch. D and E issue. Their response was that while the forms are on the Deluxe version, you have to fill out each form individually as Deluxe doesn't support the interview process. Additionally, and more importantly, filling out the forms individually prevents you from e-filing your return."
