This work is a smathering of one sentence factoids mostly in chronological order with little effort given to composing a story. The author constantly lauds his own knowledge of linguistics, pointlessly trying to relate to various facts, and recounts history from a true Turkophile bias. Getting through this book was an excruciatingly mundane task and I came out the other end having learned essentially nothing that I will retain long-term.
Skip this book. I give it two stars because it can be used as a high-level reference because the time periods are so heavily condensed.

"Arresting … Stone’s Turkey breaks the popular mould and introduces its readers to a place beyond their presumptions" ―The Sunday Times
In Turkey: A Short History the celebrated historian Norman Stone deftly conducts the reader through the fascinating and complex story of Turkey’s past, from the arrival of the Seljuks in Anatolia in the eleventh century to the modern republic applying for EU membership in the twenty-first. It is an account of epic proportions, featuring rapacious leaders such as Genghis Khan and Tamerlane, the glories of Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent, and Kemal Atatürk, the reforming genius and founder of modern Turkey. For six hundred years Turkey was at the heart of the Ottoman Empire, a superpower that brought Islam to the gates of Vienna and stretched to North Africa, the Persian Gulf, and the river Volga. Stone examines the reasons for the astonishing rise and the long decline of this world empire and how for its last hundred years it became the center of the Eastern Question, as the Great Powers argued over a regime in its death throes. Then, as now, the position of Turkey―a country balanced between two continents―provoked passionate debate. Stone concludes the book with a trenchant examination of the Turkish republic created in the aftermath of the First World War, where East and West, religion and secularism, and tradition and modernization are vibrant and sometimes conflicting elements of national identity. 11 illustrations

lots of info, horribly written and presented

The writing style and hopscotching nature of this book made it unbearable to read. Got halfway thru before almost tossing it in the Bosphorus... the author is clearly brilliant but maaaan does his writing style make for an unpleasant experience. Opt for a different volume when wanting to learn more about this amazing country

I became fascinated by the Ottoman Empire this past summer, and I relished Norman Stone's historical account. It is contains sharp observation, and a sympathy for the Ottoman Empire that is not always found elsewhere. Brief as it is, there is plenty of information and anecdote in the book to satisfy anyone.

This is extremely poorly written and thus nearly impossible to comprehend. I am now reading and enjoying with much interest the biography of Ataturk and wish I hadn't wasted my time on this.

Can anyone write more or less objective book about that region? This one as well is disturbingly subjective. Author likes Turks. Too much to remain objective.
But it reads very well. Language is nice.
Interesting, even entertaining to read but do not take it too serious.

An interesting overview of Turkish History
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 20, 2022Verified Purchase
Inevitably condensed and abbreviated this is nonetheless a valuable starting point to the subject of Turkish History. The Armenian Genocide is addressed in a manner sympathetic to Turkey, even if not entirely brushed over.
It will therefore be a contentious book and should be read in conjunction with other works if a balanced opinion is to be developed.

Competent, concise and well written. Beware: Print is small - too small for my taste!
