Henry James (1843-1916) was an iconic figure of nineteenth century literature. Among his many masterpieces are The Portrait of a Lady, The Bostonians, The Europeans, The Golden Bowl, and Washington Square. HAD OVER 50 PAGES RIPPED OUT!
While I knew that the book was going to come as used, I was not notified that it would come with over 50 pages ripped out! The whole point in buying this edition was for the case studies in contemporary criticism.

Got this for one of my classes and it was at a good price and needed this exact version

I just graduated with a B.A. degree in English and this book was on my syllabus for my Senior Seminar class, where our semester theme was novellas (longer than short stories, shorter than novels) I had heard of it, but never read it before. Typically, when a book is placed on a syllabus, it becomes a task to read rather than an enjoyment (just a student thing lol). But, not this one! I didn't want to stop reading it! The class discussions on this book/novella were amazing since the author kept thing ambiguous for a reason. So this would be perfect for a book club. While this book could be considered a novel because it is a little longer than your typical novella, it's still a quick read. And by the end, you'll be wishing it was longer!

As a school text, this edition provides a lot of additional insight into the story and the culture it reflects. Well-written essays on a variety of aspects.

Not a very good screwdriver, the pages mostly tear before

Not quite as good as the 1969 Casebook in terms of the variety of writers, but a strong companion volume because of its contextual elements -- especially the background on what the life of a governess at the time would be. The essays that make up the back half of the book are never less than thought provoking but it would be even better if there were more than one per discipline.

This is an excellent little book for anyone who wants a copy of The Turn of the Screw. For that alone it's reasonably priced, but it also has several very interesting essay regarding this literary classic. It's very insightful and it was perfect to use for my graduate level Literary Theory class and my research paper. For the price, I highly recommend it if you just want a nice copy of the book, need a scholarly source, or just want some interesting insights into James' ghost story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Victorian psychological thriller
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 18, 2013
Henry James may be out of fashion these days but let's not forget what made him a giant of his time. A Turn of the Screw is James at his best. Each page is dripping with the rich language he was a master at writing. His buttery prose tells a story which, although short, has spawned thousands of pages of analysis. Up front just a ghost story but underneath a tale of class discrimination, Victorian social secrecy and mental break down.
This is a story you will read again and again and the extra material in the book will shed even more light (or ask new questions!) about it. Henry James knew how to get inside our heads.
So, make sure you are alone on a dark evening, turn down the lights and enjoy.
