LSO Live presents the world premiere recording of Mark-Anthony Turnage's Speranza (Hope), conducted by Daniel Harding in his debut recording for the label. Speranza is a monument to the power of optimism in a bleak world - Turnage explains, ''I started working on the piece while thinking about the absence of hope. I wanted to lift people up.'' It is coupled here with From the Wreckage, described by The Times as, ''outstanding: the music begins hellishly but gradually picks up a bluesy swing…'' Premiered in 2005, the original soloist, Hakan Hardenberger reprises the role. Mark-Anthony Turnage is one of the most admired composers of his generation, and has long been associated with the London Symphony Orchestra.

I had purchased a recording of his "Three Screaming Popes" a few years ago, but it did not hit my "I love it" button. Except for that, a Turnage recording was something new to me. I don't know his other orchestral music at all, but this SACD blew me away. The playing by the LSO is beautiful, powerful and perfectly balanced throughout and the surround sound is close to the finest I have ever heard (50+ years of listening to classical recorded and live music). Speranza, in particular, is a particularly disturbing yet beautiful piece. I am very happy I stumbled upon this recording.
