Turning Grace is unlike anything I have read before. I love the world that the author created for Grace and all the changes that was going on in her body and the way Grace dealt with them. I liked the way Grace just dealt with life itself. I can’t wait to see what roads Grace takes us on next. I am anxiously awaiting the next book in The Turning Series.
Turning Grace author J.Q. Davis manages to do so in her début novel about a teenage girl who discovers her body changing in ways that are different than the changes most girls her age experience. Despite her being like a regular teenage girl in many ways (crushing on boys, dealing with peer pressure, jealousy, etc.) she finds herself dealing with much more.

The book is written from the perspective of Grace as she finds herself in a slow and seemingly unstoppable descent from relatively carefree teenager to unthinking, bloodthirsty eating machine. The way the internal struggle is depicted in Turning Grace is fascinating and really allows the reader to feel sorry for the protagonist despite her eventually doing some horrifying things. She does do some things that are horrible while sating her hunger but she also feels remorse and sadness once she regains her senses, a feeling to which most of us could relate to some degree when looking back on our past actions.
The overall tone of the book is light and fun for fans of zombie fiction, but occasionally swerves a little too far into cliché teen romance territory for my personal tastes, although I am sure the target demographic will eat it up (pun intended.) However, when the focus of the story went from crushing on boys to snacking on raw meat, I was in. The writing is fluid and it flows well, with only a handful of proofing errors, which is forgivable given the overall quality of the prose.
This début novel is a good start to what will surely grow to be a great franchise given some finesse and further innovation by the author, J.Q. Davis.
I found some scenes disturbing on so many levels. And I loved it. I know, I’m twisted. But what’s a good zombie story without some truly ghastly scenes. Like when she eats the neighbor’s cat. Yuck.
I liked Grace. Felt sorry for her. And she scared the bejesus out of me. This made me wonder if I’d stand by her, best friend or not.
There’s a sweet romance beginning, but it doesn’t take over the whole story. It does add an important character to the mix and some lighter moments in between the gnashing and blood.
I was into this book from the opening to the finish. While there is an ending, there’s more to come. And I plan to see where this series goes.
A good one for zombie fans who want a more personal story, not an apocalypse.
