The earlier model had sturdier wires with woven cloth covering that held up amazingly well, much better and longer, in fact, than the plastic joints on the headset, which ultimately gave out due to poor engineering.
This pair of earphones is equally comfortable and the plastic joints on this one do not have the same obvious weakness at the joints as the old pair. The wire, however, is no better than the wire on an average pair of Apple headphones and I am not sure it will last all that long.
Over-the-head earphones required sturdy cords, and this unit does not have them.
The sound is good enough for my purposes. I do not require a Bose unit, and the sound-canceling features available here are good enough, as is the built-in-microphone, which I seldom if ever use, anyway.
The headset has a metal rod in the top that makes adjusting the headset challenging due to needing to push/pull for the best fit. Once you arrive at the best fit, all is well, but arriving there is not easy breezy.
The Stealth 300 is a wired headset and the cable is about 2 feet long. Most 3.5mm wired headsets are passive (i.e., get their power from the device that they are plugged into). The 300 headset has an integrated amplifier (amp) that powers the headset. So, it needs to be charged. A micro USB port located in front of the audio wire allows charging of the headset's amp with the included micro USB cable. Turtle Beach states that the Stealth 300 has 30 hours of battery life in-between charges. The headset will not work unless the amp is turned on. The integrated amp & equalizer (EQ) options allow the headset to have more options than a typical wired headset and offers these various EQ options no matter what you connect the headset to. All of the controls for these options are located on the left earcup.
There is a learning curve to the options dials/buttons on the left earcup because you need to know which ones are which, by feel. The left ear cup has headset & microphone chat volume control dials, the power button & another button to change sound profiles. The power & sound mode buttons do not have distinct profiles & their arrangement makes them hard to identify by feel alone.
The power & sound mode buttons are located on the back panel of the earcup in the lower right corner. Power turns on the headset's amp while sound mode cycles through the four EQ presets (Signature Sound, Bass Boost, Bass + Treble Boost, and Treble Boost).
The sound is good and my games and music sounded as expected. There is no universal “test” ear to ascertain how booming the bass sounds or how clear the treble is. Each game has sound attributes that are important from background footsteps or the rustling of leaves to what a character is saying to the experience of booming sound effects in battle games. It is nice to have the options to change the sound effects as needed for various games. I think that this headset leans toward speech, so I think that there is more treble than bass. Yet the bass mode can boost the bass if you want more bass. Likewise, more treble may be preferred for more distinct speech when playing online games. Every ear hears sound differently.
