Enter the Turtle Beach PX22. It offers an affordable price, but doesn't lose any of the solid Stereo sound quality. This is not a Dolby Surround sound model, but it doesn't have to be. It offers solid volume control, bass and tremble sound is clear and crisp, Chat quality is also really good with controls on the control box.
Easy to hook up and painless to understand. Sometimes, well most times really, simple is good and that's exactly what the folks at Turtle Beach have done here.
This headset is the obvious successor to the PX21 and is better in every way. The PX22 feels much more sturdy than the PX21. A larger headband, more comfortable ear pieces, more crisp sound, and better chat quality. All wrapped up in a reasonably priced package.
A feature that may be missed by some, unplug it from the little mix amp toggle thing and it's a standard headphone jack usable by MP3 players, phones, Playstation Vita etc. Sound quality doesn't suffer at all.
Bonus for reading this review. If you are new to Turtle Beach headsets or just unsure about how they name their products. Anytime you see PX or a combination of that the P stands for usable on Playstation, X for Xbox so PX means it will work for both systems. I only bring that up because I didn't know that until a couple months ago. :-)
Regardless, the PX22 is a fantastic headset and one that should certainly appeal to gamers on a budget that don't want to sacrifice quality.
The headset itself is comfortable; The cushioning isn't rough like some other headsets. I found myself gaming for 2-3 hours at a time with no intrusion from the ear piece.
The biggest downside to this system is its bulkiness. The console and its wiring takes up quite a bit of space with both the console cord and headset cord being overly long. If you are very limited on space, or do not want to see an excess of cords protruding from your computer, then you may want to look into other options.
Also, the other downside here is one that plagues all mid-priced headsets: The plastic frame that holds it all together. If you're a gamer, or use headsets extensively, you know exactly what I'm talking about, and the PX22 is not immune to this type of damage either. I've personally put in 8 months of heavy use on my set of PX22's before the plastic frame snapped. I then ductaped it and had another 2 months of use before the sound started going out. With that said, ~10 months of heavy gaming/music use before I had to ditch it is A+ in my book, especially considering that you get excellent sound and sound control with this package.
Bottom line: I'm on to my 2nd PX22 now, and after 20 years of gaming, I have never once re-ordered the same headset. I highly recommend.
First, I couldn't stand feeling like I was tethered to the PS4, this may not be an issue for everyone. I move around a lot, and I feel like I was on a leash.
You can opt to plug the headset into your controller, but then you lose access to the audio controls (part of what makes this set great) and the ability to mute. Seriously, people, you need mute! No one wants to hear your conversation with your partner, children, dog, cat, what have you or you music which sounds awful through your mic blasting into area chat. Use your mute!
My second reason for returning was the control box itself. It's about 3 feet down the cable, which is great, but it also big. I have no idea where I was supposed to clip it for easy access. Even when I managed to successfully place it in my lap, it was a problem. It is FAR too easy to accidently turn the wheels for the audio controls. If I had kept I probably would have placed tap over the treble and bass controls, but I needed to be able to adjust the volume of the game and chat regularly.
The sound is great for the price if you don't mind the look of cables coming out of your Playstation & being tethered to it, and you can find a solution for the wheels on the controller this is a good choice for a PS4 gaming set.
