Mac users who want an elegant dock in which to place their MBP while at home should definitely consider the improved second generation BookArc from Twelve South. It's brushed aluminum finish compliments a desk that shares other (currently) modern Apple equipment like the Cinema Display, Wireless Keyboard, Magic Mouse or Magic Trackpad. Sure, you can just put your laptop on the desk and it works nearly as effectively, but aesthetically the Arc makes the whole set-up look better, and the ergonomics of the raised platform and cable management is also an improvement. It also positions the MPB's CD/DVD tray outlet front and center and raised up, making for easier disc removal and insertion. Is all that worth the price of admission? Well, you have to determine that for yourself.

Though the BookArc only touts compatibility with 13"-17" MacBook Pros, MacBooks and PowerBook G4s, it can also handle other laptops that are about 1" in width and have a fairly flat case.

While the cost does seem steep for a notebook stand, keep in mind that this is a piece of high quality aluminum that is identical to the kind used in your MacBook. From a design and quality perspective the stand is well worth the cost.
I consider myself somewhat of a multitasker and a power user, so I was concerned about heat dissipation with this device. Normally, when the MacBook is sitting flat on a desk it allows heat to dissipate through the keyboard as well as the hinge vents. Obviously, when you close the lid you run the risk of your temps increasing significantly. But after testing, I found the complete opposite to be the case with this device. The MacBook actually runs cooler when docked in a vertical fashion. What's more, I found no difference in CPU temperatures when docking the Macbook Hinge-First and docking it Opening-First. The raw data is below:

Shell open, driving 27" thunderbolt display AND internal display, sitting flat on desk - 148 degrees fahrenheit
Shell closed, driving 27" thunderbolt display only, sitting flat on desk - 144 degrees fahrenheit
Shell closed, inserted opening first into BookArc - 137-139 degrees fahrenheit
Shell closed, inserted hinge first into BookArc - 138 degrees fahrenheit
*these temps were observed at idle when Safari and iTunes were running* Far from scientific, but it gives you an idea for everyday use.

High quality build. It holds a MacBook Pro 15" (unibody) nicely but not overly tight. I didn't make use of the cable management system because I simply routed the cables out the back and then used my desk's built-in cable management. Recommended if you want a simple dock/stand. (I tried the HengeDock and returned it for this after trying for 2 hours to get the cables to fit).

This is a very well designed stand. It looks so elegant and is very sturdy. It is also a big space-saver, allowing me to put my macbook pro on a side shelf of my desk so wires are not seen. I would recommend this product!

When I'm working at my desk, I use dual 24" monitors and a separate keyboard and mouse with my 15" MacBook Pro, so it's usually off to the side in the closed position. The BookArc is a perfect solution that lets me reclaim desktop space and keep my MBP out of the way. In fact, using the BookArc you could fit at least 3 MacBook Pros in the same footprint as a single 15" MBP laying flat on the desk. I'd bet it makes my MBP run cooler as well - the fans don't seem to run as often.

Great product.

First of all, I'd like to say I'm an owner of both a 2010 Mac mini and a 2011 MacBook Pro. The MacBook Pro I own is pretty high-end, with an insanely fast Core i7 CPU, discrete AMD Radeon HD graphics, 8GB of RAM and more, while the Mac mini is relatively low powered, with a Core 2 Duo CPU, intergrated Nvidia graphics, and only 4GB of RAM. Why not replace the desktop all together with my MacBook? The only problem there is the MacBook screen is only 15", while my Acer monitor is around 22", giving me great screen real estate. Also, I hate typing with the laptop keyboard, I find it hard to comfortably rest my hands while sitting that close to the screen. I knew the MacBook has something called "ClamShell mode," allowing the laptop to function while still closed, as long as it's plugged into a power source and an external screen, so why not take advantage of that feature? So then I decided to find a dock of some sort to compliment the beauty of my MacBook, while still being functional.

When I started looking out for a elegant, practical stand for my desktop, I didn't come across as many solutions as I would have hoped. I stumbled across something called a HengeDock, but I didn't like the plastic material it was made of, and also I would like to have the Apple logo facing the correct way, not sideways as it would be in the HengeDock. I know this may be an issue for most, but I'm very attentive to detail. So the HengeDock was out, even though I liked how easy it was to simply drop in your laptop and pull it out when you needed to use it else where. This is something that I sorely would like to have in the dock that I ended up buying, but in the end, it wouldn't work with the design, and I'm happy with the dock I did end up picking.
