Rock-and-roll road warriors also appreciate that extra power supplies, international adapters or batteries are not required. BassJump 2 works with most pro audio software, including Apple’s Logic Studio, making it an essential road tool for listening to and editing tracks on the tour bus, hotel room or anyplace else your music takes you.

Bass boost just for your MacBook
At one time I owned an 11' MacBook Air and the one thing I disliked about it the most was the speakers. I’m a bit hard of hearing and trying to use the speakers on the Air was just horrible for me. So, you would think the speakers on the Retina Macbook Pro would be better. Well, they are, but still they miss something and thanks to Twelve South I was able to find it. The BassJump 2 is a really cool square subwoofer that gives you more bass when playing music. Twelve South designed a wonderful little subwoofer that fits nicely on your desk and is easily mobile with a nice neoprene travel bag that comes with it.BassJump 2 is USB-powered and really turns your MacBook into a mini sound system. It’s really a pretty cool set-up because they have designed it so that sound and power travel through one USB cable. This is something that appeals to me because it means less cables and less cable clutter on my desktop. The little box measures 5 x 5 inches and weighs a little over one pound. Like many other Twelve South products, BassJump 2 matches the aesthetic of the Apple laptop. It’s finished with brushed aluminum and has a classy black metal weave grille. Needless to say, it’s very slick looking. With it being a subwoofer and as small as it is, one question I had in my head was, “how powerful is this device?” The subwoofer has a 77mm speaker cone and can handle a frequency range of -6db at 50Hz-20kHz. To me, it’s enough to really punch up the sound from my MacBook Pro. The addition of BassJump 2 equates to a nice 2.1 speaker set-up with my MacBook speakers acting as the tweeters.BassJump 2 comes complete with its own custom software to help you blend your music and other sound coming from your built-in speakers with the rich sound of the sub. The BassJump software gives you Crossover Frequency, Sound Settings, and BassJump Volume control. The crossover frequency range is 100Hz to 300Hz.Podcasts have become a brand-new experience for me thanks to the BassJump 2. Before I would need to AirPlay to my Phorus speakers or put my headphones on to hear all the nuances and voices from the presenters. Now, I get such a rich strong sound and don’t miss anything.I’ve been thoroughly impressed with little subwoofer and am looking forward to using it for quite some time. It’s really nice to be able to enjoy and experience sound in a new way."This product was received at a free or discounted price in exchange for my review. I have been lusting to purchase one of these since I had my first white macbook many years back and finally got one as Amazon started selling them (I'm an international customer).

Had a bug caused by chrome and HTML5 videos earlier on, but they released the drivers in a very short duration (top class support and quick updates). Has some short latency (no scientific measurement, but its perceptible) when playing html5 vids on chrome. Again, these minor problems are mostly browser related - you won't get them if you use an offline media player.

That said, the long wait, the long lusting, the built up expectations were all met and in fact, exceeded. The casing is beautiful and discreet and the speaker can be placed anywhere on your desk without looking out of place. It pairs wonderfully with the Retina 15's speakers adequately filling in the bass range. Quite a bit to spend on what's a USB speaker, but if you're on the fence on this rationalizing in such a manner, believe me, you'd be pretty damn happy if you got yourself one! It's an awesome and well thought of device in a perfectly sized package. The bassjump as a whole gives an unimaginably higher magnitude of pleasure than the sum of its parts could (essentially a usb soundcard, loudspeaker and audio routing software).

That said, don't bother looking for imitators, this is a well differentiated high quality product that seems to have no substitutes! Only thing that makes me sad is that I didn't have this awesome device in my life earlier!

Other odd thoughts that would be proven wrong once you get this:
1. Pluging in the USB cable into your mac when you get home after a long tiring day at work: have almost plugged it in everytime! Even before the power plug.
2. Occupies space on my desk: its very unobtrusive and visually clean, so it won't create a mess
3. Bluetooth speakers/desktop speakers would provide a more complete solution to having a proper audio system: You'll be glad to know that the middle ground is much sweeter.

Apologies if this review seems like I've gotten bewitched by the bassjump or twelvesouth, I'm honestly telling you that this device is many steps above all the cheap or poorly thought of e-junk.

I've owned the BassJump 2 for a little over a month and generally have been very satisfied by the boost it gives to the MacBook's built in speakers. It provides enough bass for full external sound from your MacBook without having to buy anything else. The free companion software downloadable from Twelve South's website also allows the user to tweak the bass image by providing both volume and crossover frequency controls.

Purely from a sound quality perspective the BassJump 2 will "get you by"...in other words, it's just good enough. The sound won't blow you away like true dedicated speakers and a subwoofer would, but it makes the listening experience from a notebook actually enjoyable. For what its worth it isn't the BassJump 2's fault, it is more a limitation of the MacBook's internal speakers. The BassJump does it's job of providing bass, but ultimately you're still dealing with the rest of the sound coming from a pair of small internal notebook speakers, which are limited in the first place.

However for its price and the sound you do get it is a great buy. In particular, the BassJump 2 is perfect for travel situations where you wouldn't necessarily bring a separate external speaker set with you on the plane. This is the perfect portable setup for a hotel room, for example. And while you'd get better sound from something like a Bose SoundLink II (for example), you're not paying the Bose price. At its price point the BassJump 2 can potentially save you a lot of money.

There are a couple of small issues that I would like to see addressed. First, the companion app for Mountain Lion 10.8.3 is still in beta and has been for a long time. The main bug in the software is that it does not save your custom Volume/Crossover frequency preset settings when you reattach the BassJump via USB. I find myself having to open the app and reselect my custom settings every time I plug it in. Simply leaving the custom settings as is regardless of whether or not it is plugged in would be nice. The second flaw is a quirky one which I haven't figured out yet. Safari/OS X does not detect the BassJump 2 when playing audio in HTML5 videos *when the BassJump 2 is plugged into a USB hub*. When not plugged into a hub it plays everything fine, but once you plug into a USB hub all HTML5 audio only is cut off. Crazy, but I haven't figured out a solution. Maybe it has to do with the power draw of the BassJump 2, or the specifications of my hub, but it is annoying in that I can't reliably use this product without plugging it in directly to my MacBook, and I only have 2 USB ports.

Otherwise I would wholeheartedly recommend this product for the sound it provides and for the price.

My setup: 15 inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display (mid 2012), OS X 10.8.3 and all updates installed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Compliments MacBooks and even my Mac mini (with macOS Big Sur)
Reviewed in the Netherlands on April 3, 2022
I bought this item twice.
If you need undistorted HiFi sound or high volume sound the BassJump is not for you - you then better use Genelec monitors or Sennheiser HD600s. Also, Twelve South marketing the BassJump as a subwoofer is an exaggeration of its capabilities.
However, when you are able to get the BassJump at a bargain price, in my experience the speaker does compliment the MacBook Pro, MacBook Air and even Mac Mini (with macOS Big Sur) at home for their lacking low and midrange frequency sound.
I therefore rate the BassJump as a nice addition to your Mac tweeter speakers, if you only use it to make desktop watching and listening to Amazon Prime movies sound more natural.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bassi in più per Powerbook. A 20 euro un MUST
Reviewed in Italy on February 7, 2021
Consiglio 80hz. Max 100 Hz. Lasciate stare i preset.
