In the twelve years following 9/11, American Airlines lost billions of dollars and endured years of crisis and turmoil. Financial upheaval, the crash of Flight 587, grueling confrontations with labor, a rival’s push to acquire the company, and a challenging fight with the government tested the mettle and fortitude of its top executives.
Against all odds, American found a way to save what was once the world’s largest airline from certain ruin. Told through the eyes of American’s chief lawyer, this insider’s story of intrigue of the unfolding events is set against a personal look at the innermost workings of the sexiest industry in the world.

About the author

Gary Kennedy is the former senior vice president, general counsel and chief compliance officer of American Airlines. He joined the airline in 1984 and served in a variety of capacities for 30 years. Kennedy was named general counsel in January 2003, at a time when the airline was struggling to recover from the 9/11 terrorist attacks. For the next 10 years, he helped lead the airline through some of the darkest days in the history of the company. After retiring in 2014, Kennedy joined two corporate boards and spends his free time traveling, fishing and hiking. He knew that the events that took place during the twelve years following 9/11 would make for a fascinating book so he decided to tell the inside story of what really happened at the airline during times of crisis and turmoil. He joined with Terry Maxon, long-time former reporter for the Dallas Morning News and together they wrote this compelling story.

Is hard to understand how the company went from very successful, well run airline of the 70s 80 s and 90 s, to a 35 cents a share company in 2010. Nine-eleven / fuel prices not withstanding.......
This book provided some insight.
Learn how AA survived in spite of 9-11, the crash of flight 587, hostile takeover attempts, high fuel prices, oppressive federal regulation, Dallas Love Field vs DFW competition, and the extraordinary union demands by its pilots, flight attendants and maintenance employees.
Indeed, it's a story of a corporate miracle. By adding some juicy sex and other shenanigans to the mix, Gary's story would be worthy of a TV series or a movie.

Having spent more than a decade at AA, it was fascinating to read what happened after 9.11. Equally fascinating to see that labor unions continue to put ego, self interest and retaliation above even their own best interests, let alone those of the stakeholders. For anyone interested in commercial aviation this will read like a Grisham thriller.
