Mike Gulett has done it again! This latest work from Mike is great, another wonderful book that makes the world of sports cars accessible to everyone with an interest. Mike gives relevant history without going so deep that it would only be interesting to a marque expert. His range of suggestions is terrific. This is a must-read for anyone trying to decide how to enter the hobby, expand their collection or move to a new make of car. Job well done!

As someone who is dipping a toe into the self-publishing waters myself, I read Mike's book from two perspectives. First was an enthusiast who has a life-long interest in affordable classics. From that perspective, the book succeeds very well as Mike has profiled a cross section of affordable, and in some cases, undervalued classics. I purchased the Kindle version of the book to read on my PC and it reads and presents well.

From the perspective of a magazine editor as well as from the perspective of a self-publishing, I learned some things that will help me format my first book. From the publisher perspective I think that photos are essential but they should be bigger in the presentation. And while shots taken at car shows work within the framework of the book, if Mike publishes a second edition, he should work to get better photos with less cluttered backgrounds. With that being said, this is probably an issue that won't bother most of the purchasers of the book but as a suggestion to Mike to make his next book even better.

Pretty skimpy, and not really affordable cars in general, if it we're not a Prime freebee I would have been unhappy paying any amount for the book.

Book is well worth the money.

Thanks to Michael Gulett, I now realize that many of the cars I lust after but accepted I will never own in this lifetime, can actually be purchased for a realistic price. I don't have to be a millionaire! This book is great. it's very simple to read, and very straightforward. Michael takes the reader through each car, and talks about their appeal, often explaining how much the car has appreciated in value since brand new, and gives the range of market values. He is smart to reference two of the most reliable sources in the collector car realm, Keith Martin's Sports Car Market Magazine/Price Guide and Hagerty's Cars That Matter Price Guide (The brainchild of my dear friend David Kinney). Mike starts out with the most reasonable cars and I will say, once I'm half way through the book, our view on "affordable" differs a bit, but that's just based on my current priorities. For those I know who'd like to jump into collecting cars but have been intimidated by recent sales results at classic car auctions and by dealerships, these cars represent an excellent way to buy something sexy, something fun to "arrive in" that is surely going to appreciate instead of depreciate. My particular interest is in both the Lamborghini, the Porsche and the Apollo, all cars I would love to own and take to shows. I'd be interested to hear about more cars that are as realistic to purchase as a new luxury car and in some cases, less.

3.0 out of 5 stars A quirky little book about owning a classic car
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 1, 2014
I'm hoping for a lot of Kindle books about the cars I dreamt about as a boy in the late sixties and early seventies. Paper books are so expensive because of the costs of full colour printing and the limited market.

This is one of the first and I bought it because it covers the Lamborghini Espada, Jensen Interceptor, Maserator Bora and Ghibli, the Iso Fidia and Rivolta and the De Tomaso Pantera and Mangusta.

I'm not a practical man so I have no interest in buying or restoring a classic car. I just like reading about them.

It doesn't bother me that the book's definition of affordable goes up to about $150,000 although I suspect that it will strain many wannabee investors.

As a reader I'd have liked more detail and more photos inside and out. I'd have liked to know about their conception and development, how well they drive and perform, common problems, how to find out more about how to buy, perhaps details of the owners clubs.

What we get is a brief informal chat, an assessment of the change in value between 2006 and 2012 and the author's opinion on whether the car is likely to increase in value in the future.

It's a quirky little book but as an armchair enthusiast I wanted more. If I was thinking about buying one of these fancy cars, I'd have wanted to know much more. If I was in the market, I suspect that I would already know more detail than this book covers. I suppose there might be some people who are prepared to spend $100,000 on a classic car who know little or nothing about them but I bet there aren't many.

I'm surprised at the five star ratings on Amazon.co.uk and Amazon.com. I give it three stars based on value given by the price below £2.

3.0 out of 5 stars A book to spur interest in the classical car field but do not expect a lot of detail
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 17, 2013
As the author states in the beginning, this is neither a comprehensive price guide, nor an in-depth guide to the technical aspects of the cars described. The intended purpose is to give the reader a slightly higher appreciation for the field of classic cars and some ideas where to start.

So far, so good. However, this also defines a fairly narrow target audience - namely people with a reasonable amount of money set aside for a classical car hobby (with an eye to making this a shrewd investment on the side) but very little understanding of the cars themselves or of the field - i.e. first timers who have not taken the idea very seriously previously but need some basic information.

As to information, there is a handful of pictures for most models, a basic description of the car's history, the production period, some stats (not consistent across cars, with some getting more and others less), production numbers and a comparison of 2006 and 2012 values.

The term affordable is relative, with the cars featured going up to about US$150k, however many of those would also experience minimal depreciation (but very significant running costs). On top, the book appears somewhat US focused, with both the price information and the model selection reflecting this (the model selection also largely follows cars the author owned himself).

Unfortunately the book could also do with slightly better editing and with cleaning up of some mistakes (few but noticeable).

All in all an interesting start for someone looking at a potential classical cars hobby but beware that you will probably be very well served to do significantly more research before taking the plunge. For people already owning, or being seriously interested in classical cars, there will be little new / valuable information here.
