Editorial Reviews

In honor of Pearl Jam's twentieth anniversary, award-winning director and music journalist Cameron Crowe created a definitive portrait of the seminal band carved from over 1,200 hours of rarely and never-before-seen footage, plus 24 hours of recently shot concert and interview footage. PEARL JAM TWENTY chronicles the years leading up to the band's formation, the chaos that ensued soon-after their rise to mega-stardom, their step back from center stage, and the creation of a work culture that would sustain them.

Part concert film, part insider hang, part testimonial to the power of music and uncompromising artists, the film celebrates the freedom that allowed Pearl Jam a way to make music without losing sight of what mattered most to them their fans and the music fans that they themselves had always been. PEARL JAM TWENTY features interviews with original band members Jeff Ament, Stone Gossard, Mike McCready, and Eddie Vedder, drummer Matt Cameron, and friend and Soundgarden singer/guitarist Chris Cornell, as well as archival performance and interview footage of Mother Love Bone, Pearl Jam, Temple of the Dog, Kurt Cobain and Neil Young.

To accompany the film, Pearl Jam is also releasing a "Pearl Jam Twenty" soundtrack. The soundtrack includes 29 rare and unreleased tracks on 2 CDs, hand-picked by Cameron Crowe with his original liner notes and never-before-seen photos in a 36-page booklet. It is packaged in a hard bound book.

This collection includes Cameron Crow's written blurbs about each track. He explains why each track was chosen and what its historical significance is.... As Crow admits, a few of the tracks sacrifice sound quality for the purpose of historical significance. That said, the tracks are chosen for their emotional power--you can feel the intensity of those live performances. I thought several of tracks were the best versions of those songs that I'd ever heard (and I have heard several versions of every PJ song). The PJ 20 soundtrack is far superior to any of the other "bonus tracks"on the recent re-issue albums or Lost Dogs. So don't be scared off if you were disappointed by those releases. One word of caution, not every song from the movie is on the soundtrack and several extra demos are included that are not in the movie. This is a must have for hardcore fans--even if you have drifted away from the band in recent years!

The song selection by Cameron Crowe is poignant and reflective of the band's 20 year history. Having seen the movie, I wish a few more selections were included based on the 20+ times I've seen PJ live. Notably missing are: 'Even Flow', 'Animal', 'Corduroy', and 'Spin the Black Circle'. I understand why they aren't on the soundtrack, but their place in PJ history is significant.

Also, I'm a little surprised that the track selection did not include songs from some of the more "epic" performances, vs. the track selection that was chosen. For example, personally, I think the version of 'Release' from Pearl Jam's epic Fox Theatre in Atlanta show, back in April 1994, is much better than the track/version selected to open the soundtrack. For many, PJ's commercial-free, self-funded live broadcast from Atlanta was the first time they ever heard the band perform live. Also notably missing were performances from Kowtice Poland, State College PA, Spectrum/Philly, and Boston/Mansfield, not to mention the very first time they played Madison Square Garden (back in 2003, not the 2008 show on DVD).

Regardless, the soundtrack is much more than just a "best-of" or "greatest-hits" of live performances and rare-tracks; like the photographs on the cover, the soundtrack captures and shares moments in the band's 20 year career of creating and performing great music together! Get a copy of this CD to not only reflect on the past 20 years of Pearl Jam history, but to prepare yourself for the next 20 years of Pearl Jam history!

If you didn't catch Pearl Jam bootlegs CDs, their live on two legs album, their live on ten legs album, their greatest hits CD, their re-releases of their first three ablums and now the movie CD...you may be wondering what's here. Well, the first CD has some rough demos, but check out Black & Not For You.

I know Pearl Jam fans (and I'm one of them) go crazy over Pearl Jam material, but come on, the world didn't need to hear the demo for "Goat". This is a good album, but it's not 5 stars. I would recommend getting Crown of Thorns, Walk With Me, and be sure to check out the second side, chock full of demos.

What bothers me is that some fans automatically rate this CD 5 stars, the bestest thing ever...it's a nice trip up to Pearl Jam's attic. But this isn't the best version of "Rearviewmirror" (in my opinion) and "Blood" remains one of Pearl Jam's worst songs. Every Pearl Jam fan has their own personal favorite live edition of a PJ song, and there's some goods ones in here...and others that kinda fall flat.

So, when this was released i was thinking meh nothing really new here and just put it aside. A couple years later i now consider it to be a gem.

Hightlights being Release ( Amazing version from the 06 tour),
walk with me ( pj & neil yoing) 1 of the best recent pj performances.
Let me sleep(1st time played in 15 years) performed with eddie and mike chillin on the venue's seats b4 show.
Faithful (2006 soundcheck) better than studio version and is an rare live performance with no crowd noise and it shows how great they really are.
Evolution( live at radio station) ed's voice is magic and he growls or screams every word.
Not 4 u and Last exit are rare- live jack iron performances and are very raw and bad ass. Nothing as it seems- jeff ament demo- very cool. Then a live version of it thats fantastic with ed on vocals and Mike playing out of his mind.
Just breathe snl- perfect, better than studio. Crown of Thorns- las Vegas 2000. The 1st time they had played it and a top 5 favorite pj performance.
Black-mtv unplugged- my fav version because ed sounds incredible.
Garden, alive and why go are very early pj recordings, sound quality sounds not up to par compared to the others but they are very good and rare pj live recordings.
Given to fly acoustic guitar only, i listen to it all the time, very relaxing and mike kills it.
Rvm, betterman are great performances too and are great closing songs to a fantastic random mix of songs.
I wrote this without looking at a track list so i missed some, but just what i mentioned make this as awesome as Live on 2 legs. If anything i wish there were more songs. Disc 2 is half no vocals sountrack songs and demos/ and half - full of great live performances but disc 1 is all full pj songs.
