On August 2, 1943, a small group of Jewish prisoners at the Treblinka death-camp in Poland revolted against their Nazi and Ukrainian guards. The prisoners burned the camp down, facilitating the escape of 200-300 prisoners, of whom only 40-60 survived the war. The Author: Yoram Lubling is Professor of Philosophy at Elon University, North Carolina. He is the grandchild of Moshe Y. Lubling, a native of the State of Israel, a second-generation Holocaust survivor, and a former art critic for Davar (Israel’s Labor newspaper). Dr. Lubling is the author of numerous book chapters and journal articles on classical American philosophy, John Dewey, Martin Buber, active pedagogy, aesthetics, Holocaust studies, Jewish philosophy, and the history of Modern Zionism.

Twice Remembered

Though deeply personal (most of the book deals with correcting history and the memory of the author's grandfather--a key player in the Treblinka Revolt) and at times impassioned, this is still an academic book. "Twice Dead" is meticulously researched and documented, and its heady philosophical ideas are argued and counter argued in an annotated style that will make it a rather dry read for the casual audience. However, for the student of philosophy or history, it makes for a great read. It is also of special note for those studying the Holocaust because of its foreword by Elie Wiesel, an expert in the field who doesn't lend his name to things lightly.

"Twice Dead" refers to the idea that many Holocaust victims were murdered twice: once by the Nazis, and a second time by the generations that forgot them. Lubling touches on many subjects: the psychology of Holocaust studies, the ethics of memory, revisionist history, anti-intellectualism, postmodernism, and unreliability of eyewitness accounts, modern Zionism, and the radical Islamic movement. He ends his studies with a chilling visit to Poland and Treblinka visiting the actual spots where his family and countless others were murdered.

While I attended Elon University, I took two courses taught by Yoram Lubling on Martin Buber and Frederick Nietzsche. Reading this book brought back fond memories of the debates and lectures from the intimate classroom setting where Lubling captivated (and I imagine still captivates) his students with his quiet rage and conversational style that provokes as much as it enlightens. Those with vested personal interests in the topics discussed in "Twice Dead" will find much food for thought.

On the Ethics of Memory

Part detective story, part philosophical treatise, part family history, Yoram Lubling's Twice-Dead is an important and original contribution to the vast field of Holocaust Studies. As to the book's significance, Elie Wiesel, a man who rarely does so, has written the book's "Foreward." Why has he made such an obvious show of support for the project embodied in this "exciting" book? To aid the author in his efforts "to correct an injustice committed by historians." Specifically, Lubling's project is no less than the resurrection of the memory of his grandfather, Moshe Y. Lubling, the leader of the Treblinka revolt, and a man that has been essentially written out of the histories of the rebellion. But why was Moshe Lubling forgotten? Lubling is bound to spark controversy with this compelling, well-researched and reasoned answer to that question. Lubling's account of his grandfather's efforts in the face of the brutality of the Nazi death camp apparatus sheds light on life and death in the camps, and is essential reading for anyone with an interest in the Holocaust. But it is more than a corrective to Holocaust history; it also gets at the issue of what it means to be a Jew, and what it is to be Israeli. It is about heroism, both that of the bold instant, and that which was maintained over time in the dehumanizing drudgery and cruelty that governed life in the camps. It is about national memory and its creation and maintenance. It is about Lubling's efforts to reconcile himself to his own family's history. It is about philosophical practice. And most of all, it is about Moshe Y. Lubling, a man twice-dead, but now, by Yoram Lubling's hand, remembered.

Analyzing Inaccuracies in Treblinka-Survivors' Testimonies, etc.

Yoram Lubling is the son of Holocaust-survivor Pinchas Lubling and the grandson of Treblinka-revolt leader Moshe Y. Lubling. He traces the forgotten past of his grandfather, and how even Holocaust-promoting institutions have been slow to acknowledge the eldest Lubling.

A number of Holocaust survivors are mentioned who committed suicide because Germany went virtually unpunished (p. 5). They aren't the only ones who would've liked to see Germany incinerated!

The author is candid (pp. 12-19) about the Wilkomirski fraud, the unexpected semi-fictional character of Steiner's TREBLINKA, the made-up "Ivan the Terrible's" assassination as initially claimed by Treblinka-survivor Rosenberg (p. 126), etc. According to divergent survivors' accounts, the Chorazycki-suicide-and-aftermath is one that is conspicuously omitted, has the Goldjuden murdered in a pit, or has the Goldjuden tortured and (unbelievably) released by the SS. (How many accusations against Poles, in Holocaust survivors' testimonies, likewise rest upon hearsay or fabrication?)

Pointedly, Lubling makes it clear that, contrary to the Holocaust deniers, the inaccuracies of and contradictions between survivors' accounts in no way disprove the fact of 5-6 million murdered Jews. (Would that liberal theologians abandon the notion that relatively minor discrepancies between the Gospels disprove the Resurrection)!

Lubling repeats standard Polonophobic generalizations (see Listmania: Exposing Polonophobia...). I have read numerous Jewish accounts, and the one about Poles throwing urine from the rooftops, on Jews being herded to the death trains (p. 85), is a new one to me. Would the Germans even allow Poles to stand on rooftops in such situations? And, bearing in mind that Germans often shot at Poles merely glancing at them from partly-shuttered windows, what Pole would attempt something as overt as staring at a German operation from a rooftop?

Throughout this work, Lubling makes frequent positive mentions of Marx and Communism (e. g., p. 3, 70, 77, 173). His remark about Jewish Communists in postwar Poland being countable on one's fingers (p. 101) is too absurd to dignify with a response.

Lubling scorns any notion of Jewish "triumphalism of pain" (p. 104). But surely it is not tax-supported Museums of Polish Suffering that can be found in every major US city, and surely it is not units on Polish Suffering that are required by law to be taught to American children in many US states.

Since Jewish collaborationists are at least partly exonerated by Lubling based on the traumas of German rule, why not do the same to Polish blackmailers of fugitive Jews? He also writes: "After the war there were numerous cases in which Holocaust survivors were killed by other survivors, most notably the Kastner case in Israel." (p. 95) Probably the much-publicized occasional postwar Polish killings of Jews were a comparable post-traumatic phenomenon.

Lubling contends that Jews are unfairly treated in the media. He cites Ehud Olmert's complaint (pp. 5-6) about the selective media attention and outrage to Israeli killings of Arabs. But the Kielce Pogrom is still recounted while the hundreds of nameless 40-victim massacres worldwide since then aren't, and the same media that did cartwheels over the Jedwabne "revelation" ignored or dismissed the massacres of Poles by Jews at Naliboki and Koniuchy.
