Editorial Reviews

"Eileen Dreyer has created excellent plotting, characterizations, and pacing of narrative. Ms. Dreyer presents the reader with an exciting, well written story of romance, spies, loyalty and betrayal."―Fresh Fiction on Twice Tempted

"Top Pick! 4 ¿ stars! Dreyer is a master storyteller who merges intrigue and passion perfectly. With characters you can see and almost touch, action/adventure, dark secrets, vicious spies, tenderness, compassion and deep love, Once a Rake is hard to put down and difficult to forget. Happily, it is just the beginning of a new trilogy in Dreyer's Drake's Rakes series."―RT Book Reviews

"In the fourth addition to her top-notch Drake's Rakes series, Dreyer dazzles readers with her incomparable gift for creating heartbreakingly real characters and her inimitable flair for fusing sexy passion and dangerous intrigue in a richly emotional, wickedly witty, and altogether enthralling historical romance."―Booklist, Starred Review, on Once a Rake

"Exquisite writing, historical accuracy, a clever plot, and complex, enthralling, walk-off-the-page characters make this another fascinating gem for the award-winning Dreyer."―Library Journal, Starred Review, on Once a Rake

"4 ¿ stars! Her novels have every hallmark of a memorable historical romance: passion, unforgettable characters, an engrossing plot. May she continue to deliver her fantastic historicals!"―RT Book Reviews on Always a Temptress

"Fueled by a surfeit of sizzling sensuality, chilling suspense, and delectably dry wit, Always a Temptress brings Dreyer's first historical trilogy to a smashingly successful conclusion. Strong secondary characters add depth and humor to the book's emotionally compelling, impeccably researched plot as Dreyer again deftly combines deadly intrigue and sexy romance in a swoon-worthy read."―Booklist, Starred Review

"Vivid descriptions, inventive plotting, beautifully delineated characters, and stunning emotional depth."―Library Journal, Starred Review, on Barely a Lady

"Readers will love the well-rounded characters and suspenseful plot, and will cheer on intelligent, resourceful Olivia and Lady Kate as they take on disparaging men, backstabbing relatives, and stealthy assassins."―Publishers Weekly on Barely a Lady

"Barely a Lady is addictively readable thanks to exquisitely nuanced characters, a brilliantly realized historical setting, and a captivating plot encompassing both the triumph and tragedy of war. Love, loss, revenge, and redemption all play key roles in this richly emotional, superbly satisfying love story."―Booklist, Starred Review

Usually I love Eileen Dreyer's books. Certainly I enjoyed the first three in this series, then the last book, "Once A Rake", was a bit weak. Unfortunately, her new book, "Twice Tempted", continued the downward trend. There was so much going on in this book it was difficult to see the main focus. "Mimi" shows up again, does her bloody thing and then disappears adding nothing to the story. The most enjoyable part of the book was about Chuffy (I won't spoil things by going into detail). The author has to nod to current trends by having a sister who is, no doubt, a functioning autistic, possibly Asperger's. Then we have the weak story about Alex's father that was solved in about two paragraphs that I needed to read twice, then said "huh" to myself. Somehow this book just was not as good as I hoped it would be. Authors have a tendency to take a series several books too long and that is how this book felt to me. Nothing new developed in this story as far as solving the riddle even though supposedly the "key" is discovered. The characters, except for Chuffy, were not really needed in this series. Drake shows up and does not do much, as usual, so his appearance we could have done without. A rather boring book although I did finish it (I'm short on reading material).

I really enjoyed the complex plot of this spy-thriller-romance. Brilliant young astronomers and mathematicians, Fiona and Mairead Ferguson, once had to survive on the streets in their childhood. After finally coming to live with their grandfather, the heartless marquess of Hawesworth, they thought they had some measure of safety. But when given the news that their brother died in a traitorous plot, the marquess tosses them back out onto the streets. Fiona then has to figure out how to survive and provide a place where Mairead can continue her studies. While brilliant, Mairead would today probably be diagnosed as somewhere on the autism spectrum, so the challenge is extra daunting.

Alex Knight had to deliver the bad news of his friend's death to the ladies, but this was not his first encounter with the lovely Fiona. She had once tried to run away from her school to get to her sister, and Alex had retrieved her. He had also stolen a kiss from her and had never forgotten that moment. Now armed with new knowledge that exonerates Ian Ferguson, Alex and his friend Chuffy, who are both members of Drakes Rakes spy organization, have to find the women and restore them to their proper place in society.

Caught in the middle of the plot by the traitorous group called the Lions, the women have to earn a living, avoid detection, survive an assassin, clear their names, break a code, stop the Lions, and try to find their own happiness. Alex had always been called the "White Knight," but he feels such guilt over the secrets of his past, that he may be the one who needs saving this time around.

Now, of course, I'm going to have to read the rest of the Drakes Rakes series to learn all about the other characters that play a part. The overall spy plot is not completely cleared up, so I'm sure further adventures await.

Disclosure: I received this review copy through Netgalley for this blog tour. Thank you to Eileen Dreyer and to Grand Central for the opportunity. Yes, this is an honest review.

* * *

It did begin with a kiss, as Eileen Dreyer's novella (which introduced the students of the Last Chance Academy) suggests. Fiona and Alex are kindred souls -- something they recognized in each other when they met at the academy all those years ago. Back then, Alex was not free to love Fiona because he was married, but the connection and chemistry was undeniable, and fans of the Rakes (me, included) were left to wistfully imagine what it would have been like if Fiona and Alex had a chance to explore the possibilities between them. But now, even though his wife has died, Alex still does not believe he is free to love Fiona, doesn't believe he is worthy of Fiona's love and doesn't believe he can dare to dream to be with her. Instead he focuses on protecting her and rescuing her from the terrible, and deadly, situation Fiona and Mairead unwittingly find themselves in.

In Twice Tempted, Eileen Dreyer has ramped up the intrigue. Dreyer's background is romantic suspense and she showcases a masterful (and very wicked) mind in crafting the delicate balancing act of protecting one's self, protecting one's family and name, and protecting one's country. It is terrifying to realise the power and reach of The Lions and I did wonder if Alex would succumb to the pressure they were exerting on him.

The Rakes all see Alex as a White Knight: a virtuous and noble defender and champion, but Alex doesn't believe he deserves the name. Even now as he walks the fine line between patriotism and treason, Alex doubts his own heart and ability.

( DNF)

Wow, I never thought I'd find a Historical Romance that I didn't like. And it's not to say that I didn't like this book, it's more like I didn't have the chance to like it. Not even a couple chapters in, I found that the story gets a bit chaotic, and ever so busy. It was very distracting.

So much so that I couldn't finish. So this is a DNF for me. Now, just because I didn't like it , doesn't mean that someone else won't love it. I'm just trying to kindly state that this book was not for me .
