Review

Readers are in for a story that is emotionally intense, chock full of danger and violence and loaded with flaming passion. What more could you want? (Romantic Times BOOKclub)

I always open a Frost book with happy anticipation. (Charlaine Harris)

A stay-up-until-sunrise read... There are many Draculas out there, but only one Vlad, and you owe it to yourself to meet him. (Ilona Andrews, New York Times bestselling author of the Kate Daniels series)

Fantastic. (Ilona Andrews, New York Times bestselling author of the Kate Daniels series)

Frost never shies away from forcing her protagonists to face both internal and external demons. That character complexity is the major reason for her series impressive success. Frost s dazzling blend of urban fantazy action and passionate relationships makes her a true phenomenon. (Romantic Times Reviews)

...rambunctious series debut... --(Publishers Weekly on ONCE BURNED)

As much as I enjoyed Once Burned, I really think this sequel delivers just as much! It's sexy; it's heartfelt; and it's got just enough intrigue and action to keep me glued to the page, without ever detracting from the romance.

I hate to say it, but as the story began, I wasn't really happy with Vlad. If you'll recall, he is determined that love will never play a part in his life again. This is a real problem, since Leila is head over heels for him. The great thing about her, though, is that she refuses to settle for anything less than his heart. And while it shreds her to do it, she walks away from the only man she's ever loved. And he lets her go.

Of course, they don't stay apart. Someone targets Leila and that brings her back into Vlad's life faster than you blink. But who is out to kill her and why? Where does the sexy and eager Maximus fall into her life? Can she ever break Vlad's cool exterior and find his feelings underneath? Can the sex surpass the infamous chapter 32?

I won't spoil the answers... OK... I'll answer that last one with a resounding yes. The sex was molten hot here. Scorching. Wow. Thank you, Jeaniene Frost.

I've loved Vlad since he first entered the Cat and Bones world and he grows so much in this book. I never thought I could love him more, but now I do. He is violent and tyrannical and controlling; but once we end up exposed to the emotions he works so hard to tamp down, we also see the fierce love and loyalty in him. Meanwhile, I respected the heck out of Leila for not settling. She manages to hold on to her backbone without being bitchy or diminishing her love for Vlad. And Frost does a great job showing us that it's the real man she loves, not an idealized version of him. Sometimes it's messy; sometimes it's hard; but it's real. And I totally believed it.

Really good.

He has immense power, wealth, and the ability to offer eternal youth yet all Leila wants from her vampire boyfriend is the one thing he claims he can never offer anyone. When she can no longer take Vlad's refusal to love her, Leila moves back to the states and returns to her job working at a carnival. After there's an explosion that proves to be intentional, Leila is pushed back into the immortal world and needs to figure out who to trust and who won't stop until she's dead.

Leila has made my very short list of favorite heroines. I've loved Vlad since his first appearance in the Night Huntress series but kudos to Leila for not accepting his 'I love no one and if walk away it's over for good' attitude. It didn't make for an easy read but I respect her for it. It's more than just this reason why I like Leila. When an explosion nearly kills her, Leila has to figure out who is behind the attempt on her life and who she can trust because loyalties are not what they once were. A lesser person wouldn't have been able handle all this on top of heartbreak but Leila keeps pushing through and battles against the odds. She's not perfect but her faults in addition to her strengths are what makes her a top notch heroine.

Vlad is the same ruthless, commanding, fire controlling vampire I've come to adore but part of him evolves for Leila. She works her way into a part of Vlad he dismissed as dead a long time ago and his past, both emotional and ruthless, is further explored because of it. He doesn't make things easy for Leila because the depth of his feelings for her is unmatched and once she takes him down that road, there's no turning back. I believe Vlad gets better with each book he's in and here, even when he's being an ass, he's at his best.

I am a big fan of this series, both the Night Huntress books and this delicious spin-off. Vlad is ruthless and quirky at the same time. I liked him in Cat and Bones books but he really comes into his own in these books.

Most of the first half of the book is story based, it kicks off a touch non-linear. It might throw you if you are not prepared. It added to the drama of the book, it keeps you waiting for the kidnapping to happen. The story really flows and has a steady pace.

Leila is a great character, engaging and dynamic in surprising ways. She isn't bad@$$ like Cat, but she has strength and an iron will. I love that she is getting control of her power and turning it into a weapon she can wield in defense.

Vlad is pretty much everything the Dracula stories say times ten. He is ruthless and unbending in his resolve to make people fear him as a means to protect his people. When Leila goes into his past you get more of a feeling for how he thinks. It is an important insight into his motivations. One of my favorite things about his is that though he can be so dark he has a sense of humor and wit that pops up unexpectedly. my favorite line in the whole book: "Did the guards forget to spray Febreze?" Vlad asked in mock indignation. Then he gave me a jaded look. "It s a dungeon, Leila. They re supposed to smell."...yup, I laughed out loud at that one! He is overbearing and arrogant, yet somehow so very attractive and seductive.

The steam is off the charts when it comes! Oh good lord, the dungeon sex scene is beyond hot!! I am talking burning down the house, short circuiting my iPod and sending straight to an ice bath!! Good lord, that scene alone is work the price of the book. Nobody can tell me that scene was not straight up erotic smexy lovin!
