In book one, Texas Mail Order Bride, the oldest Cooper finds his match in the lovely mail order bride Delta Dandridge who arrives on the stage expecting Cooper to be ready and willing. Unfortunately, Cooper didn't send for any bride and before you know it the sparks are flying. In this book brother number two Rand finds a beautiful woman and sick young boy hiding out in one of the buildings on the run down ranch he just purchased. They are destitute, freezing and afraid to trust anyone, but Rand takes them in and even though the two are being hunted by a man so evil that torture is his favorite pastime, Rand vows that he will protect them from harm. It doesn't take long before these three turn into a family and Rand and his brothers will stop at nothing to keep them safe.
Fast paced, the author jumps right in to the story with Rand finding Callie and Toby by page three and it's non stop from there as they are faced with getting to know one another, learning to trust again plus trying to stay alive in the harsh environment of a Texas winter. The third and final book, Forever His Texas Bride, deals with Brett the youngest of the brothers and how this half-breed warrior finds love in the most unlikely of places. Five stars for Linda Broday and Twice A Texas Bride.
Rand is very much confident in himself (believes he knows his mind) and once he decides what he wants (even if he doesn't realize deep down he's doing it or why he's doing it), he does whatever it takes to get it -- even being ever patient and gentle with Callie. Loved watching him fall for Callie and open his heart to her.
Callie..... Callie was a lady filled with beauty, even if she believed she was damaged. While she kept thinking she was beyond repair and on her own (mostly), she also fell under Rand's protection and bloomed brilliantly.
The twists and turns in the drama/action part of the story kept me biting my nails and anxiously awaiting good to win. And while you know it ultimately will (HEA after all!), the journey to get there was rocky and sometimes scary. But that just made it worth it all the more!
Watching their family grow warmed my heart. The themes of family in Linda Broday's books have touched something deep in me -- they bond together not because of blood, but because they just choose to. They build a family that works. And I love seeing how this theme is carried through.
I just didn't love the story. Too many gaping holes where reasons for acting or not acting should be. Too many secrets without valid reasons to keep quiet. Too many betrayals after they'd fallen in love. I would've slapped her more than once, had she been in the same room as me. I found her constant addressing Rand by name annoying. Nobody talks like that. When things wound up to get scary at the end a whole lot of waiting around without action, without talking, without planning. A real let down. I see from the ratings and reviews left before me that most readers loved this book. It's probably just me.
I intend to read book 3 in the series as I already bought it. I like the premise for Brett more than Rand's. I'm hoping that story resonates more with me.
Sensuality Level: Spicy, hot, but not overly descriptive
Violence: Rated R+ (Old West violence and vendettas)
