This is an entertaining read, and I'm looking forward to reading more adventures of Katie. With plenty of loose ends from this first novel there will be lots to read about!
An engaging story (set in a wonderful place), well drawn action, some serious misdirection and a sly, wry wit that had me laughing out loud in places made "Twice Born" an enjoyable read and a refreshing change from the recent teenage-only-oriented fantasy series out there.
It was particularly interesting to me because it's based in Australia where I live, and the story takes place in and around Sydney, where I lived for over 10 years. The scenes were brought home much more clearly because I knew the places - is it like this for all you american readers? This was a new experience and I have to say the immersion into the story was so much easier.
Having said that, I suspect I would have loved the book anyway - the story was intriguing, the characters all 3 dimensional and the action largely unpredictable. After finishing this book I immediately went and bought the second book and am now eagerly awaiting the third.
So if you like urban fantasy with dragons, werewolves etc. and a strong dose of reality i.e: normal people get tired and hurt and don't bounce back immediately, you'll love this one. The backstory isn't explained upfront, it's revealed slowly through the books, this was a it confusing sometimes because it was difficult to understand relationships but it put you in the position of the heroine - she had no idea to begin with either!
A great read, go and get it soon :)
