Directed by the great Robert Benton (The Late Show, Kramer vs. Kramer, Still of the Night, Billy Bathgate) and starring screen legends Paul Newman (The Sting), Gene Hackman (Mississippi Burning), Susan Sarandon (Lorenzo’s Oil) and James Garner (The Great Escape). Nobody’s Fool renowned star and filmmaker reunite in this richly layered character-driven neo-noir. And Stockard Channing (Grease), Reese Witherspoon (Walk the Line), Giancarlo Esposito (The Usual Suspects), Live Schreiber (Spotlight), M. Tonight I rewatched it and enjoyed it even more. It's a masterclass in acting with actors and actresses who had and now have, decades of experience.
While the "whodunit" part is somewhat easy to figure out, getting there is still fun.
What a great cast: Paul Newman, Susan Sarandon, Gene Hackman, Reese Witherspoon, Liev Schreiber, Stockard, Channing, Margo Martindale, John Spencer, and James Garner. At the time, Witherspoon and Schreiber were early in their careers.
The house the character played by James Garner lives in is a gorgeous modern house that is stunning.
I'm a film noir fan, and this was a fun, easy ride. I miss thrillers like this.
OK, I’m being shallow. But those bits of business, totally unnecessary to the plot, are just a lagniappe to a terrific set….OK. Stop being shallow. A terrific array of talent. We got Paul Newman, Gene Hackman, James Garner, the adorable Miss Witherspoon, the great Miss Sarandon, Giancarlo Esposito, who was so young I had to check to be sure it was really him, Stockard Channing, John Spencer (you’ll recognize him as that guy who was in that thing and that other thing), a really, really young Liev Schreiber, the always funny Margot Martindale, and even M. Emmet Walsh doing a very brief guest starring role as an incipient corpse!
What a lineup! And all in one minor private eye picture. Everybody must have wanted to work with the two greats, Newman and Hackman. The plot, such as it is, shambles nicely from set-up to set-up entertainingly enough. Nothing fancy, just good old soft-boiled P.I. stuff that doesn’t strain the brain. Crosses are doubled, Hackman glowers, Newman mutters to Garner about getting old, Reese Witherspoon is adorable and naked, bodies drop left and right, and all the pieces in motion come together in a satisfying “Chinatown-ish” conclusion. All you can ask. I didn’t even mind Paul Newman’s voiceover. Without it, we’d need an extra hour of narrative to provide backstory and tie the pieces together, and “Twilight” runs a just-right ninety minutes. Doesn’t suffer from terminal Hollywood Bloat like just about every movie made nowadays.
Add in a nice Elmer Bernstein L.A. noir score, a big Crown Vic, lush scenery and cool rich people houses. All around, a class act. Nothing special, and not trying to be a big deal. Just a pleasant star turn by a lot of talent young and old. Recommended!
What a terrific cast. Newman, Serandon, Hackman, Garner, Channing are the headliners, but there was also a shining group of secondary players. It’s worth watching for them. The production values were fine. The story was weak. It would have failed with a lesser cast. The acting was not stellar, but it was good, as we would expect from the stars.
