When Colonel Tom Parker arranged for Slim Whitman to cut his first commercial recordings back in 1948 I'll bet no-one - including Slim - envisaged that he would still be recording over six decades later!! Yet here we have the latest album - and the first new recordings for several years - and he sounds as at home in the studo as he always did.

Despite being billed as "The World's Greatest Cowboy" when he first visited the UK in the 1950s, Slim was never a cowboy and has never ridden a horse. He has however always been closely associated with standards and much-loved favourites and amongst those have been some classic western standards like "Tumbling Tumbleweeds", "There's A Goldmine In the Sky", "Cattle Call" and "Cool Water". yet despite this, Slim had never recorded an album of "singing cowboy" favourites - until now.

If I had to criticise anything about this album it would be the lack of a decent up-to-date picture of Slim and any background liner notes. If those notes were there, I suspect that they would tell you that this album was inspired by Jerry Whitman, Slim's devoted wife of some 67 years, who sadly passed away in 2009. Jerry was a big fan of Gene Autry and was partly responsible for Slim recording several songs associated with Autry through the years. "Back In The Saddle Again" was one that he never recorded but often performed on stage. She made him promise to record an all-western album and now he has been true to his word and included "Back In The Saddle".

So how has the voice fared over the years? Well I would say that Slim at 86 years old sounds better than many half his age - or even a third!!

This is an excellent album and Slim has done himself proud, yet again and also kept his promise, to those of us who saw him in the U.K. on his final tour in 2002. I had just about given up on another album ever being released and therefore I'm over the moon with this release. It's the highlight of the year for me! :-)

There's a good selection of songs and really good backing, from top notch muscian's. I sincerely hope, the remaining 6 tracks are also released in due course!

Just played the tracks for my parents (who have been fans since the 50's)and they liked the album very much, too! They couldn't get over how well Slim sounded - obviously an old man but still in pretty good voice - better than most 50 or 60 years his junior!! :-) So, that's an order for another c.d.

A friend rang me from work earlier on his mobile - he was travelling on a passenger train (he's a Rail Guard), so I played him a few excerpts over the phone and so, that's yet another order for a c.d.! :-)

Hope many others buy and then enjoy the album too - it seems to get better, the more I play it. I don;t think anyone Whitman fan will be disappointed but remember he's an old man now, so don't expect him to sound as he did in the 60's 70's and 80's, whilst at his very best!

Slim Whitman Has to date sold more than 120 Million records, Recorded over 600 Songs and now at the age of 86 he records his latest CD.
As one of Slim's loyal followers I must admit to being a little apprehensive about this CD. Would he be a shadow of his former self? after all its been a several years since he's been in the recording studio are on tour for that matter.
Thankfully I couldn't have been more wrong.
This CD ranks as one of his all-time best! The production and arrangements on this CD are of the highest quality (It was recorded at Hilltop Studios in Nashville TN. The very cream of Studio Musicians were used( Harold Bradley, Ron Oates, Jimmy Capps, Bob Mater,Jon Kornau, Andy Reiss, and Weldon Myrick).
His voice is still in exhalent condition (Still far above the rest including many, many stars half his age) His treatment of these western songs is all you would expect from Slim Whitman
If you like SLIM WHITMAN you'll LOVE this CD
If you like WESTERN SONGS you'll LOVE this CD
If you like COUNTRY you'll LOVE this CD
If you only buy one CD of this type this year this one should be it!

50 years ago I had the pleasure of meeting Slim Whitman when he toured Australia. I was a very impressionable 14 year-old who loved country music, and I remember thinking to myself, that Slim didn't act like what I imagined a star should do. He was gracious, humble, & seemingly interested in this young nervous teenager, who had never been in the presence of such a famous personage. He did not speak down to me, but showed great interest in who I was, and what my interests were. I think he was also a bit curious about why I was into country music and not rock and roll. He was, to put it simply, a gentleman. As a singer & musician, he is truly one of country music's legends. He has been recording for over 55 years, has sold over 120 million albums, and has left a legacy that most country artists could only dream about. The reasons for his success are many, including a catalogue of over 600 classic songs, all beautifully rendered with his unique country crooning vocal style, a bevy of highly talented support musicians, and top-notch record producers. And now, amazingly, at 86 years of age, he has recorded "Twilight on the Trail, a superb collection of 12 classic western songs, a feat that will confound even his harshest critics (and he's had a few of those in his time). And despite his voice sounding a tad deeper, and an absence of the high notes he reached with songs like Indian Love Call & Rose Marie, his singing style & the melodic quality of his voice, is unimpaired by age. This is a glorious album to listen to. The selection of songs on the album is excellent, especially "River Of No Return", "Back In The Saddle Again" (beautifully sung, & my personal favourite), the title track, & the two closing numbers, "Happy Trails" & "Golden Lariat".Read more ›
