Truscott is one of the most interesting U.S. Army generals to have taken part in WW II. This book tells in his own words the story of his early days in the army. It is a warm and engaging narrative and filled with great anecdotes. He began his career as a young second lieutenant serving under a colonel who earned the Medal of Honor in the Indian Wars.
Truscott's stories of life in the horse cavalry bring this long vanished arm of service to life. The accounts of life at Fort Riley in the days when it was the cavalry school are great, and depict a way of life that has vanished forever. In addition to being an excellent officer, Lucien Truscott was a very skilled writer. His chronicle of the horse cavalry is one of the best first person narratives about army service I've read.
Highly recommended.

Well written account of daily life in the US Cavalry between the wars. I was interested because I was stationed at Ft Riley and had opportunities to train with Army units stationed at several former cavalry posts in the west. Also as a horseman I was interested in the details of cavalry training and operations in the more modern times. This book was excellent in that regard. The book is divided into chapters according to Gen Truscotts assignments. The only minor weakness is Truscott's son published the book from his fathers papers.

Not Inclusive; doesn't give over all picture of US HORSE CAVALRY

MY LATE FATHER WAS A MEDICAL DOCTOR IN THE 9TH CAVALRY REGIMENT, SECOND CAVALRY DIVISION. THERE WASN'T MUCH SAID ABOUT THE 2ND CAVALRY DIVISION. PERHAPS COLONELTRUSCOTT DIDN'T KNOW THAT THE 2ND CAV DIVISION WAS THE LAST HORSE CAVALRY IN THE US ARMY. THEY WERE PROUD MEN WHO REALIZED THAT THEY WERE THE LAST LINK TO THE WILD WEST. BRACKETTVILLE AND FORT CLARK WERE A REMOTE POST AND LOCATION. MY FATHER LEARNED TO RIDE A HORSE AT FORT CLARK. THE MEN HAD FUN IN A DIFFICULT SITUATION. IT HAS BEEN SAID THAT THE 2ND CAV DIV NEVER SAW COMBAT; LET ME CORRECT THIS...ELEMENTS OF THE 2ND CAVALRY DIVISION FERRIED MEN AND EQUIPMENT IN BURMA AND CHINA VIA HORSE AND MULE. THEY DID FIGHT THE JAPANESE. GIVE THESE PROUD MEN THE CREDIT THEY ARE LONG OVERDUE TO GET.

Perfect snap shot of life in the 20th century mounted Cavalry

The title says it all: "Twilight of the US cavalry" This is an EXCELLENT source to read about the lived reality of the cavalry troop at the dawn of the mechanized age. Readers should understand that this is NOT a comprehensive history of US Army Cavalry, but a beautifully written period piece of that special time in the twentieth century when horse troops were training and operating at regimental strength. There are many anecdotes and facts not found in other works. I would recommend this book to ANY horse cavalry and military historian interested in exactly what life was like between the wars.

Social as opposed to battle history

An excellent picture of the Army between the World Wars. It offers an especially detailed view of the Army school system of the time. HIghly recommended for anyone interested in US Cavalry, or the military in the inter-war period.
