The opening paragraph of the novel is testimony of the author's ability to create action in thoughts and his ability to portray global view of the world..He believes the first sentence of a novel should contain the essence of the story—almost like a microcosm of the larger scenario to follow. Charles Dickens did this with Tale of Two Cities , in that the classic first line contained the essential spirit of the entire saga and ends with a significant conclusion.
His sentences are meticulesly constructed with brimming detail and inventive description over every detail, almost to the point of driving the reader's mind to wonder on how he manages to transform thoughts and imagination to images pleasing the reader's senses over an expanse of territory he fills.
In this case, the world of football is projected 30-40 years from now. In the final analysis, he is really a perfectionist who is never emotionally and artistically satisfied, until he get the story just right. He believes that story telling isn’t just about entertainment for the reader. As a novelist one is creating not just a memorable tale, but creating myths. All the best sellers possess this definable quality, in that they transcend the basic narrative, and offer something indelibly mythical. Mystery and miracles could come true His work stands out by remaining unique and original, rather than following commercial trends. For example he is committed to creating stand-alone novels and not trilogies or series.
This story deals with social commentary on the nature of sport, the acquisitive nature of a material society in general to attain power, status, fame. Its life in th football arena and says:
"What would life to a pro baller be without fast cars, even faster whores, good blow, expendable cash, and some public applause to go with it...." We have a narrative of urban fantasy featuring satirical observations of power and exploitation of television, the media, and mindless consumerism. There are endeavors to use artificial intelligence, alien technology invasion from outer space, in order that some might be transformed into heroic figures.
A very intellectual approach to uncover hidden acts of evil and self-enrichment. He sets the spotlight on racial truths, moral growth and uses sport as a platform to build character or a fall from a pedastil. He lets you wonder why America is going right down the toilet, building a degenerate culture that produces noise and sells it as music and hangs up finger paintings produced. He shows how society manipulates events in order to control the masses. We learn about secret societies, psychological warfare, you name it.
“You think FBI might be in on this fixing racket with this Salerno dude,” Maddox said, “and they’re both working with the league?” “One thing’s for sure, Slade. This is bigger than organized crime and the NFL. This is beginning to look like an octopus with tentacles extending into the merchant banks and even governments.”
The book will generate great conversations and discussions for politics, philosophy, sociology, sport science... It is a book that stays with you long after reading and reread it. A reader who likes suspenseful political thrillers with a touch of the paranormal, supernatural and science fiction.will find a combination of sci-fi and psychological all in one thrilling package. The author discusses topics around government power, the power of manipulation which is real and used every day to control people. It’s important that we are all aware of that and avoid being caught in another’s agenda or become part of a secret society and be driven into a web of crime.
What if? What if these things are what's actually happening? What if we are all cursed by black magic? What if there are secret societies that use black magic so people would resort to terrorism and mass shooting and suicide bombing?
.“.. As the twenty-first century, technology more rapidly advances. Soon, cell phones that everyone has used for decades since the turn of the century will be replaced by anatomically friendly micro-chips, and the newly marketed portable VR cubes will soon replace movies and television as mass forms of entertainment. But the most important and paradigm-changing technological development involves the marriage of artificial intelligence and human consciousness.".
There are questions raised by the story, and how they relate to present governance, and social media, and are at times heavy and dark, with disturbing overtones about governance and greed, the manipulation and exploitation of society. And spoils are shared around to loyal supporters and protectors. A well-conceptualized story, blended political thriller with fantasy, magic, and alchemy, intricacy and magic that he weaves into the story.
Final thoughts by the author:
"Those to whom football is more than just a game — the champions — inherently possess something never quantified by the final score glaring from the stadium scoreboards, an indefatigable spirit rising to meet an epic challenge, and despite great odds, always striving for its best when circumstances are at their worst.
And considering all who have played the game of professional football, while the jester’s numbers are many, the champions are so truly few. For only those that dare persevere against pain’s almost insurmountable barriers, those courageous few who refuse to surrender to waning twilight’s certain defeat, those that choose to rage against death’s looming darkness to summon the rarest of will to power, shall alone excel and survive on the field of battle, and live to be remembered.
Better still, it is the warrior soul, braving epic struggle’s glorious but deathly battle, to taste transcendent salvation’s golden triumph, something more than a mere victor’s trophy, that shall forever shine the brightest, like the immortal sun blazing amid a cosmos of dying stars."
The the last description relates to the title of the book and descriptions are not only of looming darkness: Enjoy creative writing.
"Celestial showers, fiery hues of crimson and golden sunlight speared down from the cloudless arc of azure sky and settled in a shimmering halo around the summit of the enormous stadium. "
Five stars!! to a born author, so authentic and gripping.

The admixture of psychics, mystery, the supernatural and alternative history is blended uniquely and well. As Stephen has stated, ‘The subject of geopolitics has always held a fascination, fashioned a great intrigue in the mind. What lies behind the headlines; the political maneuvering, the back room deals, the secret handshakes taking place in smoky parlors? Inspired by contemporary events, TWILIGHT’S LAST GLORY is a fascinating saga. It is a tale of tribulation, romance, survival, redemption, and ultimately, spiritual transcendence.’
From the stunning cover and the Introduction of his book we are privy to the theme and the atmosphere – All things gilded conceal blackened tarnish. Maddox found his mind turning. Not so long ago, he had traveled through hell’s torturous gates only to find Nirvana’s light beckoning him from beyond. In a uniform world filled with followers, a determined leader seeking his own destiny shall always be feared. Just as Maddox released the ball, autumn’s blazing sun transformed the vacant coliseum’s emerald field to lattices of spun gold, and the pigskin’s whistling missile sliced through a zephyr’s gentle gust. Holding up his hands to snatch the white-laced, brown leather projectile out of the warm air, Solomon Cruz subtly winced and then began to laugh when straight through his stinging fingertips the ball spiraled away across the colorful logo dominating the center field at the fifty-yard line. Still, almost eight years after retirement from pro football, the old man taught me everything I know about how to be a champion and can still deliver the pill right on target, he thought. “Well, the Rebels didn’t draft number one because you had the supple hands of a pro receiver,” Slade Maddox joked. From more than thirty yards away from Cruz, with his back to the end zone, Maddox’s booming voice echoed off the surrounding tiers of empty seats. “No, I’m a quarterback, a leader, and not a follower. Just like you taught me,” Solomon hollered back, running to retrieve the ball and holding it reverently in his palm. “The field commander in chief, leading his men into a life-and-death battle,” a smiling Maddox said as he trotted towards the sidelines. Twirling the very tip of the ball on the ends of his long fingers, Solomon followed his mentor, and together they sat on one of the long benches near mid-field. “Congratulations, Solomon,” Maddox said, “you’ve come a long way from when we first met, from Saint Anthony’s to Syracuse and now the pros. This is a big day; I’m proud of you. Just remember, victory at all costs may make you a winner—” “But winning without selling your soul is what makes a champion,” Solomon finished, laughing. “I got it. Believe me, I remember what you told me: to stay away from people like Gigi Salerno and them bad boys in the Octagonal. By the way, where’s Mariah?” “She’s probably dealing with all the press hacks coming from all over the country right about now for the ceremony this afternoon, getting them, all liquored up,” Maddox joked. “Just think, in a couple of hours, Solomon Cruz, the Cinderella story from the Bronx, the Heisman winner from Syracuse — my old alma mater — will finally be the WFFL’s number one franchise player and will wear my old number nine for the first home game of the season right here, tomorrow on Sunday night in prime time on CBSPN.” Still twirling the official league ball of the WFFL on his fingertips, Solomon’s deep brown eyes grew vibrant and he turned to face his mentor.’
Stephen’s synopsis is on the mark – ‘Is it more than just a game? A global spectacle of triumph and anguish. A grand pageant of violence and drama. America's game has now become the world's favorite pastime, and she's not just the WFFL's latest superstar...But the future of humanity! In a world secretly ruled by an organized crime pyramid with strange and mystical powers known as the Octagonal, and while a legend who harbors a dark secret strives for one last short at glory in the twilight of his career, crime lord Gigi Salerno is the sinister hand casting the ultimate fate of victory or defeat. And, he will utilize any means necessary to ensure the Octagonal remains in control of the world's most popular game! But when a brilliant team doctor envisions future WFFL rosters filled out with AI, Salerno's masters secretly decide he's expendable. Now threatened by the intrepid ambitions of a young sports columnist determined to expose the Octagonal, and faced with the covert maneuvering of a once trustworthy lieutenant and the conflicted loyalties of an unscrupulous general manager, Salerno is confronted with a dilemma: he may have to befriend one of his enemies to vanquish his double crossing masters. Will he survive long enough to capture what he secretly desires most - the reluctant affections of a beautiful woman?’’
Deeply involving and entertaining, this is a solid novel that firmly places Stephen Perkins in the front of the queue of new significant authors. Grady Harp, September 18
