When filled with water allows Co2 gas to bubble out and prevents air from getting in. Enclosed design allows for slower evaporation from airlock bubble.

Also, the airlocks are plastic. The page doesn't describe them as glass, but didn't mention plastic at time of purchase either.
I think they are working out well now. As it was my first time using this type of airlock I had to look up a video on how much to fill. Silly, as it was as simple as fitting it, pouring into the top and filling to the lines on the side.
These plastic airlocks work great in the standard sized carboy. You have to really wedge them in the first few times, but they are supposed to be tight to create an air-tight seal (and have for all my projects I've used them for).
A few things to note:
- My airlocks look just like the picture, no red caps or different pieces
- Fit them with a food grade sanitizer (like SanStar), this will help cut down on bugs wanting to float around them and if liquid was to flow back into whatever you're making it will not ruin it (a friend of mine just had this happen cold crashing a beer).
- Check what kind of bung your container takes, there are a few different sizes out there. I have only used these on 5 and 6 gallon glass carboys.
The caps are clear plastic with a number of small drilled holes. As others have mentioned, it takes a strong pull to remove them for cleaning, and you have to be careful not to break them.
Other than receiving a used product; I love these for my intended use. I'm using them in half-gallon fruit juice jugs, and they fit perfect. If you're wondering about sizing: buy a 64 ounce bottle of Welch's grape juice, and if the opening of your container is close to the circumference, they will fit perfect and hold in place beautifully.
These are made from plastic and seem fairly durable. Obviously you don't have to worry about dropping and breaking them.
One of the cons about these plastic instruments would be that you're not going to remove the smell completely after using them. I would recommend heating them up in water after each use to clean them (once again, these are plastic, so don't boil them).
Lastly, for the price, these are perfect for a beginner looking to brew up some booze. This is a quality product and I would have given these 5 stars if they had not already been used, and had included the aforementioned documentation.
I recommend these and would buy again.
