Twin Cities Funk and Soul: Lost R&B Grooves from Minneapolis/Saint Paul 1964-1979 is the first of its kind 21 track compilation uncovering and documenting this largely forgotten music. Secret Stash has painstakingly researched and interviewed musicians, photographers, club owners, writers and radio DJ's from the time which are documented in the extensive liner notes. Don't let the fact that these are all "no-name" artists dissuade you from getting this CD. Good music is good music and this CD is packed with hot grooves and soulful delights. Like some of the "Eccentric Soul" collections put out by the Numero Group, this one from Secret Stash highlights a thriving scene in a city not known for its pre-Prince soul and funk connections. As the liner notes tell you, many of the artists on here were actually born in the South, but migrated to Minnesota and started playing in small clubs that were receptive to soul, blues, and jazz sounds.
All I can say is ... if you like 60s & 70s soul and funk, you'll find a LOT to love about this compilation. Really, it's very well done and packed with cool tunes. The CD also comes with a thick booklet that has biographical details on each recording artist that is featured, plus an overview of the Twin Cities music scene during this era. Dig in and enjoy!
