Twin Peaks devotees, who have kept the mystery alive on myriad Web sites, will jump at the chance to return to the spooky town that might just be the anti-Mayberry. Rarely syndicated, the Twin Peaks television series has lost none of its quirky and queasy power to get under your skin and haunt your dreams. So brew up a pot of some "damn fine coffee," dig into some cherry pie, and lose yourself in David Lynch and Mark Frost's murder mystery and soap opera, which unfolds, in one character's words, "like a beautiful dream and terrible nightmare all at once." Twin Peaks was a pop culture phenomenon for one season at least, until the increasingly bizarre twists and maddening teases so confounded audiences that they lost interest in just who killed Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee). This series was a career peak for most of its eclectic ensemble cast, including Kyle MacLachlan as straight-arrow FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper, Michael Ontkean as local Sheriff Harry S. Truman, Sherilyn Fenn as bad girl Audrey Horne, Peggy Lipton as waitress Norma Jennings, and Catherine Coulson as the Log Lady. Alumni enjoying current success include Lara Flynn Boyle ("The Practice"), as good girl Donna Hayward, and Miguel Ferrer ("Crossing Jordan"), hilarious as forensics expert Albert Rosenfield (who has absolutely no "social niceties"). This four-disc set contains the first season's seven episodes, minus, curiously, the series pilot. Newcomers will be scratching their heads over the "Previously on Twin Peaks" prologue, but an accompanying booklet sums up the story. Special features include episode introductions by the Log Lady (originally broadcast on Bravo), commentaries by assorted episode directors (but not Lynch), and features from the archives of the fanzine Wrapped in Plastic. --Donald Liebenson

- Reviewed in the United States on December 19, 2024I've heard references to this show for years but just watched season 1 today for my first time. It's been a slightly weird, wild, and quirky show with an intertangled web of a plot. Very captivating, but I feel like the plot doesn't actually come into being with the first season, so I'll have to watch further. It's good, but not much really happens, despite a lot going on at the same time, so it's complicated. I hope it becomes more than a simple murder mystery because I'm not into crime dramas.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 23, 2001Twin Peaks is among my favorite TV shows of all time. It's quirky characters, slow languid pacing and mixture of innocence and sething evil are intoxicating to me. It's a true pleasure to finally have the first season on DVD.
NEW VIEWERS OF TWIN PEAKS BEWARE! Twin Peaks is a mystery and some of it's secrets are revealed in a few of the episodes directors commentaries as well as the supplemental material on disc 7. If you want a completely unspoiled Peaks experience, these sections should not be watched until the ENTIRE run of the show has been seen (this includes season 2). Not that spoilers are rampant, they're not. But every now and then a slip up reveals something that shouldn't be known to new viewers. What's revealed? Well the most egregious of all is Laura Palmer's killer. This is no problem for long time Peaks Freaks, but why they'd want to ruin the experience for new viewers is beyond me. Watch out!
The series is split into 4 discs (2 shows per disc with the fouth holding episode 7 and bonus material). The picture and sound are the best I've ever seen them for Twin Peaks. The only time the picture is lacking is for the Log Lady introductions which look terribly fuzzy and hazy. Not that it matters much to me, as I never liked those segements anyway and you have option of watching them or not. The menu system is beautiful and fairly easy to navigate. My only qualm is that the text is a bit small even on my 36" TV. There is a terrific Twin Peaks family tree type thing on disc 7 that shows you each characters relationships to others and allows you to view the actors biography, a taped interview and their other credits. It's a terrific resource!
The Twin Peaks pilot has been caught up in legal battles for many years and as such it's not included in this set. It's a damn shame, but you can find foreign copies of it (in english) on eBay. This set makes up for it's omission with a page in the booklet devoted to important characters indtrodced in the pilot as well as another page summarizing the plot. Not as good as having the pilot included, but certainly every effort to make up for it was made.
This a "must buy" set for Peaks fans and the best presentation the show has ever had. I'll be watching this many times over for many years to come. I only wish the mystery wasn't spoiled for new viewers in some of the supplemental materials. Here's hoping the second season and a US release of the original pilot are coming soon!

Every Actor knocks the roll perfectly and draws you into the series literally, they are that talented. The Mind of the Great David Lynch is like no other. Fascinating, Exciting, Thrilling, Oddities, Symbolic meanings and sounds with imagery to match. World of fascinating music also. Never dull moment. They don't make them like this for series. Must have Classic and great for your soul. Addiction, Exciting, Expect the unexpected. You'll be thrilled. Every thing is perfectly on point. Best of the Best. Thanks to all the amazing casting and David Lynch's mind.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 22, 2015There is not much I can say about Twin Peaks that has not been said for decades. I loved it in first-run TV and find it equally enjoyable now. It's a damn good transfer to HD, too, considering, and the soundtrack must be from the original pre-TV eq masters, since it does not have the typical TV show boom-tinkle that was common then in early stereo broadcasts. Bizarre characters, surreal occurences, quirky shooting and editing, a GREAT soundtrack by Badilamento, and some truly weird dialog all come together to make for an enjoyable series with long and short story arcs.
This series pushed a few envelopes back then in the 90s, shown at 10pm in most markets. Seeing it now with absolutely nothing edited out and without ads makes every episode into a multi-act play, the way it should be viewed.
I don't think it's appropriate for anyone under about 13 or 14 years, but otherwise recommend it to anyone who likes quirky or mystery or atmospheric stuff. This is all three and much more. Great camera direction, unique shots with custom made lenses... this is a work of art and the story just gets more and more gripping as it goes along to the jaw-dropping season ending cliff-hanger.
You just have to see it!

StefyReviewed in France on March 3, 20185.0 out of 5 stars Un pic du genre

ich-will-Kunst-die-Gefühle-wecktReviewed in Germany on April 18, 20075.0 out of 5 stars Oh mein Gott!
Was ist denn das?????
Wirklich Lynch?
Faszination pur - also 5 Sterne ganz klar von mir als kritischen "Frischling", was Twin Peaks betrifft.
-------
zur Technik:
Bild: dem Alter her entsprechend total annehmbar.
