Arguably the best television show ever
Verified purchase
Twin Peaks was groundbreaking for television, but it's also simply a work of art. The writing and characters are so rich and developed that this series stands the test of time and multiple rewatches as well. Almost every character's subplot is interesting and Kyle MacLachlan steals the show on top of it. This show works for both viewers who want some entertainment and viewers who want to think about what they've seen. The juxtaposition of series scenes with frivolous ones, the surreal imagery, the over-the-top performances that really work, the brilliant dialogue... Honestly the uniqueness and positives are kind of endless. Needless to say, it's one of my favorite shows ever.

Crazy funny show

I didn't watch this when it first came out, so I thought I'd try it now. It's one crazy show --- as in "what just happened?" I heard a podcast which said that David Lynch got the idea for this show from a cold case murder in 1903 where a woman was murdered. But there's only so much craziness that I can stand and Season 2 was over the top. Stopped watching Season 2.

An amazing ride!

I think it's one of the most intensely Wild, insane, funny, bizzare and strangest shows ever to be televised but I would hate to say that I don't love it... There has never been nor will ever be any other show like it. I loved the entire series and yes the second season did go off the rails and it was more of a surreal comedy somewhat yet still retained some great stories from some of the other characters besides the Palmer's. I do like James Hurley and his family but his story was probably the weakest of the show yet like I said I do like James and even in this third season as well. I do not think there will be another show like Twin Peaks and back in the nineties I was too busy out and about with friends a lot and it was a great time period for me but I do regret that I missed Twin Peaks when it was first aired and I was a johnny-come-lately but it's so glad that I have been able to watch it. If you want to show that will keep you on the edge of your seat and blow your mind at the same time and have a good chuckle now and then then this show is for you.

Flawless, until...

Okay. This series is obviously one of the most daring and avant garde televised events ever committed to celluloid. It has created its own subculture and has influenced every person who viewed it to add more mysterious and esoteric qualities to their own creative work. The characters are thoughtfully crafted, well cast, and, ultimately, become a part of your subconscious.

Unfortunately, the series devolves halfway through the second season into a cornball soap opera that makes you wish they just dropped the ax after we found out what really happened to Laura Palmer. I'm sure that's what most people involved (other than the folks in accounting) wanted.

I do encourage all who read this to watch. I just warn you. Watching past episode 9 of season 2 will be the emotional equivalent of watching someone you love slowly die (slightly melodramatic). So, tread lightly towards the black lodge my friends. But, you would be a lesser person for not having watched up to the moment they "jump the shark". Enjoy!

A classic quirky, artistically excellent mystery series, transferred quite well to HD. Very enjoyable fun!

There is not much I can say about Twin Peaks that has not been said for decades. I loved it in first-run TV and find it equally enjoyable now. It's a damn good transfer to HD, too, considering, and the soundtrack must be from the original pre-TV eq masters, since it does not have the typical TV show boom-tinkle that was common then in early stereo broadcasts. Bizarre characters, surreal occurences, quirky shooting and editing, a GREAT soundtrack by Badilamento, and some truly weird dialog all come together to make for an enjoyable series with long and short story arcs.

This series pushed a few envelopes back then in the 90s, shown at 10pm in most markets. Seeing it now with absolutely nothing edited out and without ads makes every episode into a multi-act play, the way it should be viewed.

I don't think it's appropriate for anyone under about 13 or 14 years, but otherwise recommend it to anyone who likes quirky or mystery or atmospheric stuff. This is all three and much more. Great camera direction, unique shots with custom made lenses... this is a work of art and the story just gets more and more gripping as it goes along to the jaw-dropping season ending cliff-hanger.

You just have to see it!

You should watch this if you plan on watching the new Twin Peaks coming out in 2017.

This groundbreaking series (exceptional real film, and sound recordings) from the early 1990's is being promoted now (2017) because a brand new 25-year anniversary series is about to be released on a well known premier pay network and they are trying to reinvigorate old fans and to bring in new ones as the debut of the new series nears.

When the original series first aired in April 1990, the promotion mantra was, "Who killed Laura Palmer?" As a result, most people, myself included, were drawn to the series by that one unanswered question. Consequently for the producers of the series, when that question was answered in December of 1990, a big portion of the audience lost interest, or were confused, since most thought the whole purpose of Twin Peaks was to solve the murder of Laura Palmer, and perhaps that of Teresa Banks (who was mentioned early in the series, and was more prominently featured in the movie "Fire Walk With Me", which was released after the series ended in 1991.)

The series never recovered from this marketing mistake, since most fans, like myself, did not realize at the time that Twin Peaks was originally intended to be an all-in-one "nighttime soap opera" (PG-13 by today's standards) that was to have drama, mystery, horror, comedy, and sci-fi all wrapped up in the stories of the residents of the fictitious town of Twin Peaks, tucked into the NE corner of Washington state (USA) just south of the Canadian border. So in the first 17 of the 30 total episodes aired, few people got invested in any of the stories of other Twin Peaks residents, that were not directly related to the murder of Laura Palmer.

This revolutionary series is a bit dated now, although, as I said at the beginning, the audio and video are exceptional, and they play well on HD and in surround sound. You should watch this if you plan on watching the new Twin Peaks coming out in 2017 just to get the background on some of the characters who will show up in the new series.

My favorite soap

I bought the first season in particular because it's the strongest out of the others, as well as my favorite. I keep coming back to it every time, and love putting it on as cozy background noise. Funnily enough, Andy is one of my favorite characters (he has some good lines and moments), with Cooper obviously at the top.

Why did they spoil it?
Verified purchase
Twin Peaks is among my favorite TV shows of all time. It's quirky characters, slow languid pacing and mixture of innocence and sething evil are intoxicating to me. It's a true pleasure to finally have the first season on DVD.
NEW VIEWERS OF TWIN PEAKS BEWARE! Twin Peaks is a mystery and some of it's secrets are revealed in a few of the episodes directors commentaries as well as the supplemental material on disc 7. If you want a completely unspoiled Peaks experience, these sections should not be watched until the ENTIRE run of the show has been seen (this includes season 2). Not that spoilers are rampant, they're not. But every now and then a slip up reveals something that shouldn't be known to new viewers. What's revealed? Well the most egregious of all is Laura Palmer's killer. This is no problem for long time Peaks Freaks, but why they'd want to ruin the experience for new viewers is beyond me. Watch out!
The series is split into 4 discs (2 shows per disc with the fouth holding episode 7 and bonus material). The picture and sound are the best I've ever seen them for Twin Peaks. The only time the picture is lacking is for the Log Lady introductions which look terribly fuzzy and hazy. Not that it matters much to me, as I never liked those segements anyway and you have option of watching them or not. The menu system is beautiful and fairly easy to navigate. My only qualm is that the text is a bit small even on my 36" TV. There is a terrific Twin Peaks family tree type thing on disc 7 that shows you each characters relationships to others and allows you to view the actors biography, a taped interview and their other credits. It's a terrific resource!
The Twin Peaks pilot has been caught up in legal battles for many years and as such it's not included in this set. It's a damn shame, but you can find foreign copies of it (in english) on eBay. This set makes up for it's omission with a page in the booklet devoted to important characters indtrodced in the pilot as well as another page summarizing the plot. Not as good as having the pilot included, but certainly every effort to make up for it was made.
This a "must buy" set for Peaks fans and the best presentation the show has ever had. I'll be watching this many times over for many years to come. I only wish the mystery wasn't spoiled for new viewers in some of the supplemental materials. Here's hoping the second season and a US release of the original pilot are coming soon!
